    There was a meeting for the fist time in 175 years. It was held by a representative from each estate and Louis XIV. The clergy and nobles had always dominated the estates throughout the Middle Ages.
  • National Assembly

    National Assembly
    They voted to establish the National Assembly. It claimed the end of absolute monarchy and the end of representative government. This vote was the first deliberate act of the revolution.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    Tennis Court Oath
    The third estate delegates found themselves locked out of their own meeting room. They broke down a door to an indoor tennis court pledging to stay until they draw a new constitution. This became known as the Tennis Court Oath. In response Louis stationed his army of Swiss guards around Versailles.
  • Mob Stormed Prison

    Mob Stormed Prison
    A mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed a prison. The mob overwhelmed the guards and seized the prison. The angry ones in the mob hacked the commander and guards to death.
  • Noblemen joined the National Assembly

    Noblemen joined the National Assembly
    Noblemen made speeches declaring their love for liberty and equality. Motivated by fear they joined the National Assembly. Sweeping away the privileges of the first and second estates thus making everybody equal, by the morning the Old Regime was dead.

    The National Assembly created the new constitution. The constitution created a limited constitutional monarchy. It stripped the king of much of his authority and created a new legislative body the Legislative Assembly.

    The former king was beheaded by the guillotine. National convention had to contend with the continuing war with Austria and Prussia. At about the time the convention took office the French army won a stunning victory at The Battle Of Vlamy.

    Robespierre became leader of the committee of public safety. The next year Robespierre governed France virtually as a dictator. The period of his rule became known as the Reign Of Terror.

    Napoleon Took Political Power
    Napoleon took the political power of the French. Troops under his command surrounded the national legislature and drove out most of his members. The lawmakers who remained then voted to dissolve the directory.
