    After the Great Fear, the National Assembly aimed to gain peace and stability among the French citizens.
  • Woman march on Versailles

    Women depended on clientele from the nobility, in order to earn wages. After the fall of the Bastille, the aristocrats began to leave France, increasing the economic crisis. To protest this, around 7,000 women marched on Versailles.
  • Royal family is arrested while attempting to flee France

    During the march on Versailles, the royal family attempted to escape, and were captured and arrested by the protesting women.
  • France declares war on Austria

  • National Convention declares France a republic

    After Louis’s imprisonment and the September Massacres, there were rumors of new aristocrats, and crowds threatened the citizens of France, leading to the formation of a French Republic.

    With all the fighting and rioting in France, mainly because of him, Louis XVI was sentenced to death in January 1793.

    Reign of Terror

    Robespierre joins the Committee of Public Safety, which had been granted dictatorial power. While in power, he aimed to bring equality to France, which ultimately led to executions of all those suspected of conspiracy against the Committee.
  • Thermidorian Reaction

    In July 1794, Robespierre was arrested and executed by the National Convention, and France was purged of his supporters. This eventually led to another economic downfall.
  • Napoleon overthrows the Directory

    Conspirators against the Directory saw Napoleon as a prime leader, with his military skills. On November 9, 1799, the group of Directors were disbanded and Napoleon was named the First Consul.
