    Robespeirre was elected elected president of the powerful Jacobin political faction. A year later, he participated in writing the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. He was the head of the new National Convention. He was then elected to the comittee of public safety.

    A large group led by women from the fish market, began to march towards versailles. They gathered outside of the palace and demanded bread for the poor. The king and queen ignored this, causing it to form an extremely hostile riot.

    The march of Versailles became violent, and the revolutionaries stormed the palace, forcing the king and queen to hide. They wanted the head of Marie Antoinette and used their pikes to tear her bed to shreds. This horrified the king so he decied to mive his family back to Paris.

    Louis, Marie, and their children put on disguises and fled the capital. As they reach Austruan soil the King requests a break. The royals were recognized by an angry crowd that put them under arrest and returned them back to Paris

    Because Austria is where the King tried to escape to, the Girondins and Sans-Culottes desired war against them. They believed defeating neighboring Monarchies would lead to the spread of democracy. The war proved to be a disaster for France.

    The guillotine was created as a new form of painless killing. Its purpose was to simply kill ther perso not cause them suffering. It was used to kill many people during the Reign of Terror including the King and the Queen.

    The national convention decided to put Louis XVI on trial for treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to be executed via the guillotine. Louis was executed in front of a cheering crowd.
