    Formal Opening of Convention
    Louis XVI called a meeting with Estate-Generals in Versailles to come up with a new taxation plan. They had to conduct this meeting because the king had run out of money.

    The members of the deputies of the Third Estate also known as the National Assembly, assembled on a tennis court after being locked out of their meeting room and swore not to separate until a constitution was made. All these events led the king to station his army around Versailles.

    A very angry mob of people with guns entered the Bastille and took control of the prison. Many of the people who worked there were beat to death and it became a great symbol for the revolution of France.

    Nobleman made speeches about how they should all be equal and they expressed their opinion. They destroyed the privilege of the First and Second Estates and by the morning they had killed the old Regime.

    The panic of the Great Fear.
    This was a very bad period of chaos because there were rumors that the aristocrats were planning to overthrow the third Estate and this caused them to rebel and actually break into the palace. Because they broke in the palace and killed a guard, they forced King Louis XVI and his family to leave Versailles.

    King Louis XVI Power Ends
    When the king realized his life was in danger, he and his family tried to escape to Netherlands. When they were near the border they were caught and brought to Paris. When they tried to escape they made the people angrier and they stripped him of most of his power. They made France into a limited monarchy and it created the Legislative Assembly.

    Austria and Prussia wanted France to have an absolute monarchy again and because they were pressuring France into this, France declared war. War didn't start off well for them.
  • Jacobins Club

    Jacobins Club
    The Jacobins Club convicted Louis XVI for treason and they killed him. The Jacobins Club had taken control of the National Convention
  • Robespierre Takes Control

    Robespierre Takes Control
    Robespierre became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He then became a dictator and ruled the period that was known was Reign of terror. He believed the saw the connection between virtue and terror.
  • A New Beggining

    A New Beggining
    The national Convention turned on Robespierre and they arrested him and demanded his execution. This marked the end of the reign of terror and a new start for France. Many of the ideas changed after Robespierre's death.
