    Meeting of the estates general
    . A meeting between the 1st estate, 2nd estate, and the 3rd estate which met at versailles. It has been 175 years since the last meeting. 1st and 2nd estate voted together outvoting the 3rd estate. 3rd estate wanted to change it by the ideas of the enlightment to give them a sense of importance. Tennis Court oath - was the meeting where the representives of 3rd estate was. They wanted to approve new taxes on the 3rd estate.

    Creation of the national assembly
    Members of the 3rd estate who took sovereign powers in respect of taxation and decided to frame a constitution restricting the powers of the king. Members had issued alot of the constitutions and take the tennis court pledging to create a new constitution. The basic principals of the french revolution was "liberty, equality, fraternity." The rights that were guranteed were freedom of speech, the press, religion.

    A Medieval paris fort where king louis xvi imprisioned his enemies, the riot launched the french revolution.
    "Bastille" - a symbol of the despotism of the ruling Bouron Monarchy Members of the national assembly feared that the king would use violence to end their meetings. The mob went into the prison and killed the commander. The action became a powerful symbol of the french revolution. It was one of the 1st events in the french revolution. The king also used violence to end the meetings.

    The representives of the french people, constituted as a national assembly, and considering that ignorance, neglect, or contempt of the rights of man are the sole causes of public misfortunes and government corruption, have set forth in a solemn declaration inalienable and sacred rights of man. Representatives constitute as a national assembly. Proclaimed liberty, equality, the inviolability of property & right to resist oppression. " men are born and remain free and equal in rights."

    The national convention was created because the legislative assembly felt powerless. The 3 important leaders were Jean-Paul- Marat, Georges -jacques Danton, Maximilien Robespierre. Most of the members were lawyers and they comprised the constitution. It held executive power in France during the 1st years of the french first republic.

    The powerful Montagnards were eager to try and execute the king in order to prevent a return of monarchy and to defend the revolution from its enemies. At the Scaffold, louis began to deliver a speech proclaiming his innocence, but a drumroll drowned out his voice. When the deed was done, a young guard held up the dripping head for all to see. Louis attempted escape in 1791 but was captured and returned to Paris. National Convention declared France a republic and brought Louis to trial for crime

The reign of terror did not spare any particular class, occupation, or gender. 16,000 to 40,000 people were executed during this time. The executed enemies from france and other foreign places.

    The sudden, violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. A coup is a change in power from the top that merely results in the abrupt replacement of leading government personnel. They use the extant government's power to assume political control of the country.
