French and Haitian Revolutions Timeline

  • Meeting of Estates General

    King Louis XVI had called all estates together for an assembly but third estate was left out of most discussions. This was a big cause for the French Revolution and soon after the tennis court oath was made.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    An angry mob of 3rd estates stormed a prison. The prison was a symbol for the Monarchy's dictataorial rule. This helped win the French Revolution and showed the two larger estates and King Louis that they were serious about their cause.
  • Declaration of Rights of Men and Citizen

    Similar to the deceleration of independence, used ideas from Enlightnment and stated properly was "natural" and "imprescriplable" right of man. This stated on paper what their cause was and created a new set of laws for after the revolution.
  • March on Versailles

    Angry mob marched to palace of Versailles where King Louis XVI was located and demanded he marched back to Paris with them. As they were cold and hungry while he was staying in a luxurious palace. The 3rd estate realized King Louis XVI wasn't taking the revolution seriously and proceeded to feed the hunger of the revolution.
  • Gens de Coleur demand equal rights from France

    "People of color" demand independence from France because of the success with the French and American revolutions. This ignited a spark for the Latin revolutions.
  • Beheading of King Louis XVI

    One day after being convicted of conspiracy with foreign power. King Louis is gullontined in Paris for treason. France no longer had a leader, the country was free with no one to lead them. The people of France had finally gotten what they wanted from the revolution. Freedom and equality.

    Reign of Terror

    Revolutionary government took harsh measures against those suspected of being against the revolution. Over 40,000 people were were executed because of conspiracy against the revolution.
  • French national assembly granted free blacks for French rights in Saint Dominque.

    Jean-Jacques Dessalines gives Haiti independence and published a Declaration of Independence. "Saint Dominque" is abolished and is renamed Hati again. This was the first black republic in world history.
  • French forces admit defeat to slave armies and evacuate their forces

    France lost more than 50,000 men to slave armies and evacuaed from Haiti. Haiti gained freedom soon after, which inspired civil war in America and Louisiana purchase.

    Napoleon is Emperor

    Napoleon crowned himself Emperor in 1804 and takes over most of Europe. This was the first emperor Crowned in over 1000 years. Dictatorship rose because of this. Napoleon eventually died of stomach cancer in May of 1821.
  • Colony of "Saint-Domingue" is abolished

    Renamed Hati and was free from French rule and was independent.
