French and Haitian Revolution

  • Meeting of the Estates General

    Representatives from each of the three estates met to discussproblems in France. This was the first members from each estate had met and led to a copperation between the rich and the poor.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The members of the third estate stormed the Bastille and stole weapons and ammo. The people were then armed and able to fight against the French leaders.
  • Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen

    The estates general wrote a "declaration of rights" that they all agreed on, and to work on together. This separated the people from the King and wrote out the future morals they needed to be able to govern themselves.
  • March on Versailles

    Women of the third estate marched to the palace Versailles and demanded that they be given bread. They were given some but not enough to feed the entire crowd. This showed that the royal family could be influenced by the people, including the women.
  • The Gens De Colour demand equal rights from France

    The Gens De Colour (free blacks) demanded rights from France after the revolution occured in order to secure their superiority over the slaves. The free blacks eventually did gain their rights and eventually helped abolish slavery.
  • Beheading of King Louis the XIV

    King Louis was publicly executed by guillotine for his crimes against his people, and after his eath the country elected new leaders and changed the rules that dictated their lives.
  • The French National Assembly granted free Blacks full French rights in Saint Domingue

    The French National Assembly did not grant the colony abolition, but did give rights to the free blacks who lived in the colony. The free blacks either used their new power to help slaves gain abolition of slavery or used it to have more power over the slaves. But either way the free blacks now were involved in the decision making of French politics.

    Reign of Terror

    The "Reign of Terror" was a time of violence where thousands of "criminals" were executed and imprisoned for their crimes against the people of France. Although this got rid of many criminals it also was mass death and left the country without leaders.
  • The Colony "Saint Domingue" is abolished

    After years of war and violence the colony finally abolished slavery. This would inspire the abolition of slavery in other areas as well.
  • French forces admit defeat to the Slave armies and evacuate their forces.

    The French forces fought against the slaves who had lived in the colony of Saint Domingue, but were overpowered by the forces and were pushed out of the colony. After they left the country was renamed Haiti and gained freedom, but they were cut off in trade by many countries and became incredibly poor.

    Napoleon is Emperor

    Napoleons reign was from 1804-1814, he gained power from a coup d' e'tat in 1799. During his reign the government of France was declared, but France lost many resources in battles against Russia led by Napoleon.
