Four Important Events Greece Timeline

  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    Persia tried to conquer Greece thrice as revenge for Athenians helping a colony rebel. This lead to the Battle of Marathon in which the Greeks won with the Phalanx formation. After winning they ran 26 miles. Then came the Battle of Thermopylae in which the Greeks united to stop the Persians. The odds were 7,300 to 10,000 Persians. The Greeks lost this battle.The Battle if Salamis was the battle in which the Greeks won by sinking 1/3 of the Persian fleet.This caused the Greeks to win the war.
  • Period: 461 BCE to 429 BCE

    Golden Age of Athens

    Athens became the leader of the Delian League after winning the Persian Wars. This caused Athens' economy to thrive. During this time, Pericles was the leader of Athens, who increased Democracy, created the strongest navy, and built the Parthenon.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 403 BCE

    Pelopponnesian War

    Athens became too powerful as leader of the Delian League, so Sparta created the Peloponnesian League to counter it. Athens locked themselves inside the city wall but a plague killed a third of them in the second year. Philip the 2nd of Macedonia easily conquers Greece.
  • Period: 336 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander the Great's Rule

    Philip the 2nd of Macedonia dies at his daughter's wedding. Alexander is king at age 20. He conquers Greece and the Persian Empire in the order: Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, Persia, and India. He dies of malaria at age 33, giving his empire to his Generals.
