    Christopher Columbus was an explorer sailing fro Spain who wanted to find the East Indies. He landed in San Salvador instead, but died believing that he'd achieved his goal of landing in the Indies. He is often known as the man who discovered America.

    Martin Luther 95 Thesis
    The 95 Thesis were written by Martin Luther and were nailed by him to the Wittenberg castle church. This was the start of the Protestant Reformation.
  • Creation of the Edict of Nantes

    Creation of the Edict of Nantes
    A royal decree created by Henry IV giving religious tolerance and freedom to worship to the Huguenots.
  • English Civil War

    English Civil War
    The English Civil War was a war fought between the Cavaliers, those who supported Charles I, and the Round Heads, those who supported Parliament. As a result of this war, the Round Heads won and Charles I was put o trial and executed.

    King Louis XIV, "The Sun King", revoked the Edict of Nantes, which was established by Henry IV. He was devoutly Catholic and the Edict of Nantes allowed Protestants to have religious freedoms.

    The Glorious Revolution was when James II fled to exile because William came with a Dutch Army. They call is the Glorious Revolution because no blood was shed. William and Mary, Protestants, then took the throne after signing the English Bill of Rights.

    The Congress of Vienna was a meeting of the major European powers to re-establish a balance of power in Europe for the future after the defeat of Napoleon. This was the cause of the attempt of unification of Italy and Germany.

    Matthew Perry opening Japan to trade
    Perry was sent to Japan by Fillmore, the president of the U.S. at the time, to negotiate a treaty that would guarantee safety of U.S. soldiers and would open up trade with the Japanese. Japan signed the Treaty of Kanagawa and met the U.S. demands.

    The Italian unification happened because the Congress of Vienna had separated the whole state into "a patchwork of independent nation-states" ruled by different Germans, French, Spanish, Austrian, and Catholic Churches. There were two nationalists who helped to unify Italy into one whole state; Cavour helped to unify northern Italy and Garibaldi helped unify southern Italy
