    American Civil War Begins
    The American Civil War begins. This is a war between the northern and southern states fighting over the fairness of slavery.

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Lincoln declared that the 11 states, still in rebellion, must free all of their slaves. Check the link to see pictures of the emancipation proclemation and read a brief article with some information.

  • American Civil War ends

    The Civil war lasted 4 years. I would highly recommend clicking on the link attached because the video is very short ( about a minute long) and really helps you feel the emotions behind this war. There is also some very informational text on this site.

  • Ku Klux Klan is Formed

    Ku Klux Klan is Formed
    The date of this group being formed is not exactly listed but it was between April and July. The Ku Klux Klan is one of the most infamous lynch mobs during the civil rights movement.

  • Ida B. Wells Published a Pamphlet on Lynching

    There is no exact date for this event so ignore the October 23. Ida B. Wells is a commonly unknown Civil rights activist. However her actions, similar to Rosa Park's, should have gotten her more attention. The recognition she deserved wasn't awarded to her because she is an African women. At the time neither Africans or women were treated well.

  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    This is a landmark supreme court case. Plessy v. Ferguson established the idea of "seperate but equal."

  • National Negro Comittee is formed

    The National Negro Comitee is a group of activist working for civil rights.

  • NAACP

    The National Negro Committee changes their name to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

  • First Black Doctor

    First Black Doctor
    Dr. William M. Wells opened up a practice in Orlando, Florida. It is now a museum called the Wells' Built Hotel. There is no exact date for this event. Ignore the October 23.

  • Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching

    Jesse Daniel Ames got 40,000 white women to pledge against lynching.The exact date is unknown. Ignore the October 23.

  • Supreme Court Stops Segregation in Washington D.C. Restaurants

  • Plessy v. Ferguson Overturned.

    The Supreme Court rules aginst "seperate but equal" in Brown v. Board of education and Bolling v. Sharp. Thus, overturning Plessy v. Ferguson.

  • Rosa Parks doesn't give up her seat

    This is a monumental time in history. It shows defiance. (notice he similarities between Rosa Parks and Ida B. Wells). This led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    When the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed by President Johnson, it got read of the literacy tests, poll taxes, and other unfair rules that didn't allow the African-Americans to vote in the Southern States.

    The Civil rights Restoration Act of 1988 basically says that anyone, any businness, anything that recieves federal must follow civil rights laws.
