Events Leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War took place from 1700 to 1721. Peter the Great of Russia, along with rulers of other countries, saw that Sweden was vulnerable because their ruler, Charles XII, was only 16 years old. A lot of events took place in this war. Russia invaded Ingria. In Livonia, Charles XII approached Peter’s army. Peter fled and left his troops there to fight alone. The Russian army was then destroyed. (There was no specific day and month)
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt took place on December 14, 1825 in Saint Petersburg. This revolt was against Czar Nicholas I because all the rebels thought that Nicholas cheated his brother out of the throne. The Russians wanted a free state without a czar, so 3000 men began to revolt. Nicholas I didn’t want a massacre under his name so he organized peace talks, but those failed. More than 60 people died and all the rest who were captured were either hung or sent to Siberia.
  • Alexander II Emancipated the Serfs

    Alexander II Emancipated the Serfs
    Czar Alexander II emancipated all the serfs in 1861. He emancipated all serfs, however, it was not fair. Serf were free of the landowner. Ex-serfs now were allowed to own property, marry their choice, trade freely, sue, and vote.
  • Alexander II was Assassinated

    Alexander II was Assassinated
    Alexander II was assassinated on March 13, 1881 in the streets of Saint Petersburg. He was killed by a bomb people from the “People Will” group threw. This group was created to overthrow the Russian czarist autocracy.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War lasted from February 8, 1904 until September 5, 1905. This war was a very big disaster for Russia because the Japanese attacked the Russian port, Port Arthur. Japan has a series of quick victories against Russia and quickly gained a world power.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Bloody Sunday took place on January 22, 1905 in Saint Petersburg. Georgi Gapon organized a peaceful march. The purpose of the march was to ask Nicholas II for better working conditions with a petition. 1000s of people joined Gapon. Soldiers started shooting at the marchers, killing 100s and wounding 100s more.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Revolution of 1905
    The Revolution of 1905 started on January 22, 1905 in Saint Petersburg. The revolution was a series of strikes and riots in which the peasants burned down and destroyed the houses and belongings of landowners. In order to stop this, Nicholas II was forced to set up an elected assembly called a Duma. However, the Duma quickly dissolved.

    Russia's Involvement in WWI
    Russia’s involvement in WWI lasted form 1914-1918. The Russian government considered Germany a threat to their territory. Russia joined with some allies. The Russian army was the largest in the world, but there wasn’t enough weapons and ammunition for all the men to have their own. General Alexander Samsonov was given command of the Russian Second Army to invade East Prussia. The germans captured 92000 Russians. 2 million died. (no specific day or month)
  • March Revolution

    March Revolution
    The March Revolution happened in March of 1917 in Saint Petersburg. There was a series of riots and strikes because of the food shortages due to the war. Demonstrators overthrew the czarist government, and Nicholas II abdicated the throne. Then the Provisional Government was set up by Alex Kerensky. This government was temporary and allowed people to have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and it was based off of written laws.
  • Czar Nicholas II abdcates the throne

    Czar Nicholas II abdicated the throne on March 15, 1917. He did this because workers were striking in Petrograd and he sent men out to shoot them. The men, however, didn’t shoot the strikers, but they joined them.
