    Egypt's location caused interest in some Eurpoean countries. To keep it under the Ottoman Empire's control, they sent Muhammed Ali to keep rule. Instead, he took the land for himself and broke away from the Ottoman Empire.

    Due to French and British interest in Egypt, it became more modernized. Muhammed Ali helped make this happen. Ali's grandson, Isma'il, helped the cause of modernization by opening the Suez canal. This was a waterway that connected the Red Sea to the Mediterrainean.

    Isma'il made many reforms that would modernize Egypt. He also tried irrigation projects, and communication systems. All of this effort led to major debt to Egypt. After Isma'il put Egypt in this debt Britain took over.

Egyptian government started to turn into a mini parliament. What benefited Britain, is that Africe couldn't think of a better way to rule their country, not until World War 1.

    Britain started to take advantage of Egyptians. They started using them as slaves. They started kidnapping peasants and making them do labor in Mesopotamia, Syria, and France.

    Food crops were being replaced by cotton, which started to cause people to be hungry. Hungry people are not happy people.Egyptians started to revolt. Mobs started killing British officer. British officers built barricades around the city of Cairo. Eqypt was in a state of havoc. In 1922, Egypt was allowed to have their own ruler. In the span of a year and a half, many British officials were killed.

    The Anglo-Egyptian Treaty gave Egypt some of their own independence. The Egyptian citzens were still not happy. Britain still controlled most of the economy and the Suez canal. Britain wasn't going to go down easily. Egypt connected Britain to India.

    During World War 2, numerous forces started closing in on Egypt. One of the most powerful, was Germany. They fought until British forces retreated to Cairo. In the fall of 1942, British forces were defeated by German forces. Egypt was now free of British control.

    After British control, advances were made in mining, sanitation, and chemical idustries. Egypt is more modernized today due to imperialism.
