Shostacovish feared for his life in Soviet Russia. His fourth symphony was a different style than his previous three had been and he was unsure if it would be accepted by the leaders of Russia.

Tenth Symphony.

Stalin's death marked a time of rejoycing for all of Russia but especially for Shostakovich. He wrote his tenth symphony and did everything he was afraid to do before. He felt he could truly be himself.
