In 1933, Mao Zedong led his army 6,000 miles north after being surrounded by Chiang's army. Chiang Kai-Shek was in a civil war in China, fighting Mao Zedong's army. The Long March led to Zedong's win and the start of communism in China.

Mao Zedong's army wins the civil war and China becomes communist leader of China. Nationalists flee to Taiwan where they create the Republic of China.

Under communism, farms were organized into large collectives, which farmers disagreed with, leading to a decrease in production. There was a huge famine and at least 14,000,000 people died. The idea was abandoned in 1960.

People started to question communism. They wanted private ownership. Mao Zedong created the Red Guard, which were college students who attacked college professors, business leaders, and imprisoned. These attacks were carried out because Mao Zedong wanted everybody to be the same under communism.

Mao Zedong died in 1976 and Deng Xiapong took over. He allowed more private businesses and China was introduced to foreign investment and western ideas.

In 1989, over 10,000 students started to protest communism in Tiananmen Square. Chinese army came and killed students on sight. The pro-democracy movement ended and although Deng Xiapong allowed more private business, he didn't allow political freedoms.
