With the seize of the capital in 1975, the Khmer Rouge began killing people of ethnic minorities and religious minorities, including monks, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and especially the Cham Muslims.

In 1975, the Khmer Rouge made it illegal in Cambodia for slaves and civilians to speak any sort of foreign language other than the one that deemed native to Cambodia. If you were to speak in a foreign language, you would be punished.

The Cambodian Genocide took place between 1975 and 1979. A regime, the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot killed an estimated 1.5 million - 3 million people. Victims were beaten and made into slaves who then died of starvation and acts of murder. The regime was defeated in 1979 by Vietnam authorities who had intervened.

In 1976, after gaining power, Pol Pot renamed the country of Cambodia to 'Democratic Kampuchea, he declared his own republic and referred to this as "The Year Zero"

After making citizens become agricultural slaves, the Khmer Rouge decided to starve their victims as well. Only allowing them to consume 90g of food each day. This starvation led to illness and diseases and ultimately, death.

In an attempt to bring order back into the country, Vietnamese forces began war with Cambodia. The two countries fought back and forth.

S21 was a High School converted into a prison by the Khmer Rouge, it became a torture, interrogation and execution center. Most victims were brought in without evidence and were tortured into giving false confessions. Out of 14,000 people known to go through this prison, only 7 survived.

In 1978, Vietnam invaded Cambodia, assaulting many Khmer Rouge and S21 soldiers. It was a bloodbath until Vietnam was able to maintain enough control.

In 1979, Vietnamese forces forced Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge to flee to the border region of Thailand. The Vietnamese take Phnom Penh.

The same year the regime was defeated, the People's Republic of Kampuchea was established by a new government. Elements of life before the genocide are now returning back to normal. However, forces were unable to capture Pol Pot and many soldiers.
