  • Political Careers

    A man named Norodom Sihanouk wanted a political career. Sihanouk's father became the president, and Sihanouk became the prime minister.
  • Death of a Ruler

    In 1960, Sihanouk's father died. In place of him, Sihanouk became the head of state, so he could rule the people. If he didn't rule the people, who knows what could've happened.
  • Sihanouk Breaks us Off

    Sihanouk broke off any relations that we had to Cambodia in 1965. He started allowing North Vietnamese guerrillas to set up different bases in Cambodia, to back up their campaign against the US-backed government in South Vietnam.
  • Bad Times in Cambodia

    Sadly, in 1969, President Nixon told the US to started bombing campaign against North Vietnamese forces ON Cambodia ground! This is because of the North Vietnamese forces setting up the bases.
  • Poor Cambodia

    The US Air Force dropped 539,129 tons of bombs on Cambodia. They killed 700,000 people! The bombing drove people into the cities, and the agricultural system had a huge collapse.
  • Overthrown!

    Prime Minister Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk. He joined with the Khmer Rouge, and there was a resistance war. The US and Vietnamese invaded, and drove people from the border into Cambodia. There they joined with the "weak", and isolated Khmer Rouge. A "civil war" began...
  • Religion Banned in Cambodia

    In 1975, Cambodia completely banned religion. Anyone who DID have a religion, was executed. Not only that, but family relationships were banned too! People were half starved, and when they went forgaging for food, they were executed! Anyone who complained was executed too. Soon after, people who spoke a foreign language, or had to wear glasses, were executed. This all ended with the Vietnamese creating war with Cambodia.
  • Overthrowing the Khmer Rouge Government

    The Vietnamese army finally captured the Cambodian Capital (Phnom Penh), resulting in overhtrowing the Khmer Rouge Government. A group called "The People's Party", took over the power, and Hun Sen became the prime minister, and Heng Samrin became president. Khmer Rouge went into sanctuaries along the Thai Border. They made bases, and Thailand and China started supporting them. They did this because they were afraid of Vietnamese invasion.
  • Winning Elections

    In 1981, the Pro-Vietnamese Kampuchean People's Revoluntary Party won the parliamentary elections. There was some really bad news though. The international community refused to reconize the new government! The international community is the world's countries! The world's! hat made some problems!
  • Hun Sen Becomes the Prime Minister

    In 1985, Hun Sen became the Prime Minister. Soon after, Cambodia started have guerrilla wars. Guerrillas warfare is a weird type of war. People make sneak attacks, raid people, and sabotage people. Hundreds of thousands of people became refugees. This means that people were basically forced out of their homeland, or country.
  • Withdrawing From Cambodia

    Although after Pol Pot's soldiers left to Thailand, they never did stop the guerrilla war against the Vietnamese. However, Vietnam finally gave up in 1989, and withdrew from Cambodia. Cambodia was re-named "State of Cambodia". Also, Buddhism was re-stated as the state religion. This means that the state accepted the religion that they wanted to practice.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    After all of the chaos, negotiations were starting to be made. In result of this, the Paris Peace Accords of 1991 occured! Communism went away in Cambodia, and what is known as a provisional government was made. It ruled until 1993, when elections occured and the consitution was framed. Sihanouk was made a consitutional monarch, also known as "head of state".
  • Sihanouk, King Again!

    Many things happened in 1993, but the most important was that Sihanouk became the king again! The country was re-named the Kingdom of Cambodia. Also, the government-in-exile lost it's seat at the UN. A government-in-exile means that they state to be the legimate government, but can't exercise legal power. Instead, they have their permanmet home in a foreign country.
  • Pol Pot Dies

    In 1998, Pol Pot himself died. His jailers say he died from Heart Failiure, but really no one knows. He was 73 years old when he died. The man already had Malaria, so he was very sick. His wife said that he died in his sleep. People are not sure how many people he killed, but they're thinking at least 1.5 million, but as many as 3 million!
  • Tribunal Against Khmer Rouge Leaders

    In 2001, a law was passed that there would be a tribunal against Khmer Rouge Leaders. I tribunal is anyone authorized to judged, or allowed to judge. Khmer Rouge was charged of genocide. Donors pledged $560 million in aid for this to happen!
  • Hun Sen Being Re-Elected

    After about a year of politics not getting better, the prime minister Hun Sen was re-elected. This happened because CPP got a deal with the Funcipec party.
  • Sam Rainsy In Prison for 18 Months, then Released.

    An man named Sam Rainsy, is an opposition leader. An opposition leader is someone who is the leader of the biggest government. Well he was charged with absentia of defaming Hun Sen, and to be in prison for 18 months. Absentia just means that he did this while he was absent from something, and defaming means that he ruined Hun Sen's reputation. He got these charges because of how high of a leader Hun Sen is. Luckily in 2006, he was released, and he could go home because he got "royal pardon".
  • Ranariddh Arrested!

    In March of 2007, Ranariddh, Sihanouk's son, was imprisoned. He was sentenced with absentia, and he had to be in prison for 18 months. Although he denies, he was caught with selling the Funcipec party's headquarters. This is why he was imprisoned too.
  • Kaing Guek Eav Goes on Trial

    A former leader of the Khmer Rouge, Kaing Guek Eav went on trial for charges of murdering and torturing thousands, and thousands of people. He was the leader of the Tuol Sleng prison camp!
  • Cambodia Charging Two Thai People for "Spying"

    Cambodia charged two Thai people of spying, after the people crossed the border! Tensions are starting to rise! They were arrested after all of this. Forces exhanged gun fire across the border. Hun Sen went ahead and asked for peacekeepers just in case they needed to calm things down a bit.
  • Thailand and Cambodia Withdraw Troops

    After people getting upset about the two Thai people crossing the border, things actually started calming down. Thailand and Cambodia backed off, and made the troops withdraw from the border. This all happened near the Preah Vihear temple.
  • Norodom Sihanouk's Cremation

    After dying of a heart attack in 2012 and being 89, everyone gathered for the cremation of the leader Norodom Sihanouk. They came to Phnom Penh for the cremation.
  • Parliament Passing a Bill, and Parliamentary Elections

    Parliament passed a bill that made it illegal to deny the cruel act of Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. Also, there were parliamentary elections. The ruling party of Hun Sen won, and people claimed that someone was doing something illegal, which caused some weird things!
  • Two Seniors Arrested For Something in the 1970s!

    In Cambodia, two seniors (old people) were arrested. They were leaders of Khmer Rouge. This happened because of the terror that they caused people in the 1970s. The second in command, Nuon Chea, and the former head of state were the first to be arrested.
  • Hun Sen...30 Years in Power!

    A very important event occurred in 2015! Hun Sen, the Prime Minister re-elected, was in 30 years of power!
