    Cambodia gains independence form France.Sihanouk becomes king of Cambodia.

    Prime Minister Lon Nol overthrows Sihanouk.

    Lon Nol is overthrowed by Pol Pot and the Khmers occupy Phnom Penh. The city is evacuated and people are forced to move into the country and do agricultural work. Money and other freedoms are outlawed. Upper and middle class people along with the educated are put into camps for torture and execution.
