    The Khmers break off from the Funan Empire and enjoy a brief Golden Age from the 9th - 13th century. After a period of decline, Cambodia prospered again in the 16th century when its kings promoted foreign trade with the Spanish and Portugese missionaries.

    In 1970 Cambodia's Prince Sihanouk was put out of power in a militay coup.The leader of this movement - Lieutenant-General Lon Nol was made president. Sihanouk then joined forces with a communist rebel group: the Khemer Rouge. Together they attacked Lon Nol's army and began the civil war. The result was a blatant disregard for human life and the murders of 1.7 million people - 21% of the population.

    The Funan Empire had strong trade connections with India and the Roman Empire. Under the rule of Fan Shih-man, the empire reached its greatest size - stretching from what is now Malaysia to Myanmar. The country's wide reach allowed a quasi-feudal society to form.

    Cambodia - Thailand Border Dispute
    The dispute began when after years of tension, a Thai ultra-nationalist group began to spread rumor within their own country that the land surrounding the Preah Vihear Tempple in Cambodia, was in fact part of Thailand, which Cambodia was illegally invading. It is still gooing on today despite Cambodia's repeated efforts at peacemaking.
