    Sometime in the middle 1200s, the Mexica tribe arrived in the Valley of Mexico.

    Around 1325, the Mexica began farming; around the same time they also founded Tenochtitlan.

    In 1428, the alliance that the Mexica had formed with the Texcoco and the Tlacopan defeated the Tepaneca, who that had former paid tribute to. From this time forward, the alliance proceded to dominate and establish an empire in the area from Guatemala to Central America.

    In 1487, the Aztec priests sacrifised 80,000 war prisoners in a ceremony of sacrifice for their sun god.

    In 1519, the explorer Cortes from Spain arrived in eastern Mexico with 500 men, looking for gold. He then formed an alliance with the Tlaxcalans, enemies of the by now quite large Aztec empire.

    About 6 months after Cortes seized control of the Aztec capital by taking Montezuma hostage, one of his officers slaughtered a group of 200 Aztecs who had assembled in order to perform a religious ceremony. This caused the Aztecs to revolt.

    In August of 1521 the leader of the Aztecs at that time, Cucuhtemoc, surrendered.

    The building of Mexico City over the Aztec capital is considered to have marked the official end of the Aztec empire.

    While in Honduras for an expedition in 1525, Cortes had Cuauhtemoc tortured and hung.
