    The organisation is founded in Cairo by the Arab League.
  • The Six Day War

    Israel strikes Egypt following a naval blockade of the Straits of Tiran, interpreted as an act of war. Israel defeats the combined forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. By the 6th day, Israel has captured the Sinai peninsula region and the Gaza strip (from Egypt), East Jerusalem and the West Bank (from Jordan), and the Golan Heights (from Syria).
  • Yom Kippur War

    Israel surprise-invaded by Syria and Egypt, supported by other Arab nations.
  • Camp David Accord

    Egypt and Israel sign the accord, agreeing to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Sinai peninsula, in exchange for peace and a framework for future discussions regarding the West Bank and the Gaza strip.
  • Israel-Egypt Treaty

    Egypt becomes the first Arab state to recognise the State of Israel
  • Independent State of Palestine Proclaimed

    The Palestinian National Council proclaims the state of Palestine, although this new state is not officially recognised by the rest of the world.

    Yitzhak Rabin (PM of Israel), Shimon Peres (President of Israel) and Yasser Arafat (Chairman of the PLO and head of the Palaestinian National Authority) are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize following the signing of the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government, as well as the Israel-Jordan Treaty.
