I was born in a some what rich family. I was born the youngest of two, I had an older brother named Felix. I was born in a small town named Karlsruhe, which is where I grew up. We lived in a nice part of town so there wasn't very much violence. My older brother, Felix always watched over me and took care of me. My parents were not very kind to us so all we had was each other.

    Felix Baumann dies
On November 10, 1865, my brother and I were walking to the market, as we usually did in the morning, to get eggs for breakfast. We went through the back yard and were heading across the train tracks. As I crossed the train tracks I dropped my money and didn't realize until I reached the other side of the tracks. I then began to walk back and get the money. I heard my brother screaming at me, but I didnt know why. Next thing I knew I was lying next to my brother, who was hit by the train.

    Left for Ellis Island
My husband and I left for America. We wanted religious freedom, as we were both Jewish. We also wanted to go to America because there was work, (there was no jobs in Germany) for my husband, as a logger. We also went so that I could open a store and run it myself. I brought a trunk containing 2 dresses, 2 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of undergarments, a brush, a bit of money, knitting supplies, and thread.

We arrived at Ellis Island filled with excitement. A short time later we bought a house in New York City. To pay the bills I began to sell my dresses on the street. My husband helped me sell them because there were no logging jobs in New York City for him.

    Moving West
After about a month of selling dresses on the street, a man was walking past when he heard my husband and I talking about how crowded New York City was. He stopped and told us that there was a lot more open land in a new found territory, Washington territory. He also told us that there were many job oppurtunities. With that, we packed up and left for this new land.

    Arrived in Washington Territory
We arrived in Washington on November 22, 1878. We found a nice store that had an apartment on top, so we bought it. We were very happy with the apartment that we had, and I was happy I could finally own my own store. I decided to name it "Elegant Armor." As I worked at the store my husband looked for the logging jobs that were supposidly available. He finally found a good logging job that payed well.
  • Harsh Winter

    Harsh Winter
During this harsh winter, my husband could not work. It snowed constantly, and the temperature was always at or below zero. Because no one had warm enough clothing, I didn't have much business either. I spent most of that winter feeling rather sick and tired. I continued to sew dresses so that I would have many for Spring.
  • Crops Died

    Crops Died
Along with logging, my husband had found a patch of land not too far from our home. He loved to take care of all of the plants when he didnt work. But during the horrible winter all of the crops died. It was horrible because that is where we got a lot of our food. He had the choice of either selling the land or taking time off work to tend to it. He decided to sell it.

At last we were blessed with a baby. My husband and I were filled with joy. But at the same time we were filled with worry. We were already struggling as it was. With another mouth to feed, it would be very hard. We decided to put the worrys aside and charish and love the thought of our baby.

    Baby Born
We were blessed with a baby boy. We decided to name him Felix, after my beloved brother. Felix was a good baby. He didn't eat much and was very quiet. We were very happy about both of those things. Felix was very helpful as he grew up. He would often help me in the store, and sometimes even helped his father at work.
