     Ancient Olympic Games
    The Olympic games first started in Olympia,Greece in 776 BC. The Olympic games were part a festival and it was held in honor of Zeus. In the beginning of the games there was only one competition and that was a race called the stade. As the years went on many more events were added like the long jump,wrestling and the discus throw. Ancient athletes who were male got to participate in the Olympics.

    Creating The Iliad and the Odyssey
    Homer wrote both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Odyssey was about Odysseus making his journey back home after the Trojan war. He went through many challenges but finally makes it home safely.The Iliad was about Achilles anger that leads to disaster.Both were set during the Trojan war, and both taught the value of honor, courage and excellence. It is important to greek history because it has a lot of their history told in just two stories, like the wars that shaped them( textbook).

    Persian Wars
    The Persian wars consisted of three battles; the battle of Marathon, Thermopylae, and the battle of Salamis. The battle of Marathon was won by the Greeks because they used a specific battle formation called the phalanx. The phalanx was when all the foot soldiers got side by side with their shields and spears and charged. After the Greeks won Pheidippides ran 26 miles to Athens to tell them that they won. The marathon race was named after this battle.

    Athens Vs Sparta
    The society of Sparta was very militarized, whereas Athens was more focused on their arts and culture. In Sparta boys went to military brackets at the age of 7. They were told come home carrying your shields or on them. The boys in Athens went to school at the age of 7 until they were 18 and then they went to military training. The women in Athens were expected to stay at home and manage the household. Women also couldn’t own property, and weren’t held in very high standards.

    The Golden age first began in 300 BC. Athens became very rich and powerful as the leader of the Delian League after the Persian wars. The architecture included the most famous the Parthenon, thanks to Pericles who was the leader of Athens at the time. They also had three types of columns that held up their buildings. Their columns were ionic,Corinthian and Doric. They also had classical art, their art usually portrayed ideal beauty, balance, symmetry,harmony, and serene features.

    Socrates was a philosopher who taught by asking many questions and giving little answers. He liked to engage as many people as possible in his arguments, he believed that arguments were superior to writing. Socrates was born in 469 bc, and lived in Athens. He was pronounced by the oracle the wisest man in Greece. Not everyone thought that though; people put him on trial for neglecting the gods and corrupting the youth. He was found guilty and had to drink a cup of poison hemlock as punishment.

    Aristotle was born in Macedonia and moved to Athens to study at Plato’s academy. He studied at Plato’s academy for twenty years before he returned home to Macedonia after Plato died and King Philip the second hired him to prepare Alexander the great for his future role. Aristotle was a philosopher that believed in logic and reason and taught his students through that method.

    Alexander the Great was born in July 356 BCE. He came into power after his father Philip the second was murdered. Aristotle taught Alexander about politics,critical thinking,and war. Alexander conquered many countries like Asia minor,Syria and Egypt. His army rebelled against him because he was forcing them to keep going to India and they were very tired. He died of malaria on the way home from India. His empire was split apart by his generals.
