    Started when the city state of Miletus rebelled against Persian rules. In 498 BC Athens crossed the Aegean Sea to Asia minor. They eventually conquerd a persian city Sardis.

    In the battle of Marathon the Athens were badly out numbered. They decided to charge. It worked. The persians were forced to flee to their ships, But the Greek army stopped them

    Battle of Thermopylae

    Battle of Thermopylae
    In this battle The persians were geared with a whopping 100,000 men and 600 to 700 led by King Xerxes with a Greek army of just 10,000 men and 200 to 300 ships. The Greeks held a pass that prevented the greeks from coming through. They held it for 3 days. On the third day King Leondias of Sparta had him and his troops retreat and had 300 Spartans stay to defend the pass from the Persians. All 300 Spartans died defending the pass.

    This was the last battle of the Persian wars. Before King Xerses marched into the Athens and burned the city to the ground.The Persians were set to conquer all southern Greece. But in the battle of Salmis a navy battle aganstt the persians and greeks The greeks lured the persians into shallow waters then rammed the Persian ships and sank them. Also the Greeks were sneaky and had men attack the Persian ships. Xerses stunned by this defeat left Greece and went home. The Persian wars were over

    After winning the Persian wars the Greeks formed the Delian league in case the Persians attacked again. This started 75 year period from 479BC { the end of the Persian wars} to 404 BC { The end of the Peloponnesian Wars} This was known as the Golden age of Athens cause of their arsistic and cultreal achivements ever

    This war lasted for 25 years. The Greeks were still led by Pericles. Pericles knew the Spartan army was stronger but the athens had a stronger navy. If the Athens could avoid a major land battle they could have a good chance of winning.The athens didint meat the spartans on the battlefield. So the spartans just waited. Meanwhile the Greeks used their navy to bring supplies and attack towns.

    In the second year of the Pelopansian war began with another spartan land attack. Again the Athens retreated behind their walls. But things didint turn out so well a plauge swept through the city of Athens killing a quarter of the population The plauge lasted for 3 years. Even worse Pericles died as well

    In about 415 BC A man named Alicabades suggested the Athens could conquer the island of Silicy which is now part of Italy, If the athens could conquer it, athens could renew its supplies and attack Sparta from both sides. The plan was set and it was a fail. The athens met strong resitance, They held for long but were forced to retreat in a panic. Many Athens were killed, taken captive, and made slaves for the rest of their lives.

    IN 404 Bc the athens surrendered and the spartans won. In punishment the spartans made the athens tear down their walls but let them keep their democracy. In the end the Athenian empire and the Golden Age of Athens was over.
