American Industrialization Timeline

  • First Steam Engine

    In the year 1712 the first steam engine was developed by Thomas Newcomen. At this time the steam engine was not very useful, but it would play a big role in years to come.
  • Spinning Jenny

    In the year 1764 a British man by the name of James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny. This invention sped up the process of sewing cloth greatly by spinning more than one ball or yarn at once.
  • First Steamship

    At this time a man by the name of Jacques Perrier invented the steamship. The steamship would play a major role in transportation, and shipping goods.
  • Cotton Jin

    In 1794 Eli Witney invented the cotton jin. This allowed for cotton to be created much quicker, which had a large impact in the South. Cotton plantations quickly grew in order to produce more and more cotton. This caused for more slave use and trade as well, as most of the time they were the ones doing the work.
  • The Steam Engine

    This is when the steam engine was starting to get used for many industrial purposes. Altough, they were not yet being used for railroad purposes, they were still greatly inustrializing America. At this time steam engines were commonly found in factories and textile mills, because there were able to increase work and production rates in these places.
  • Typewriter

    In 1829 an American man named W.A. invented the typewriter. This also had a large impact on many different industries. It allowed for people to write more neatly and quickly than ever before.
  • Canals & Railroads

    At about this time transportation was begining to greatly be industrialized itself and have a large effect on all American industrialization. Canals and railroads were both becoming more and more common, and were both extremely effective as well. These formes of transportation allowed for people to travel and ship things from large cites significantly faster than before. Both the canal and railroad industries would continue to grow in the years following.
  • The Sewing Machine

    Isaac Singer invented the sewing machine at this time. This would revolutionize the way clothing was made as we still use these machines. The machines we use today are more technical and modern, but they are based off of this same original concepts. The invention of the sewing machine allowed for clothes to be sewed and taylored more quickly and effectively than ever before.
  • Dynamite

    In 1866 Alfred Nobel invented dynamite, which revolutionized the mining industry, as it became easier and safer to blow through walls, mountains, and such. This also made clearing paths and making roads much easier.
  • Disease

    In 1870 Louis Pasteur created a vaccine that fought against many common germs, which helped prevent common disease. This was quite important, as it allowed people to live longer and be healthier.
  • First Powered Airplane

    At this time, the Wright brothers created the first airplane that was not powered by wind. There was much doubt in the brothers abilility to complete this task, but after many trials they were successfull. This was a huge breakthrough, as powered airplanes have become a major source of transportation all around the world, and it all began with these two brothers.
