Today I boarded a large boat headed for America, even though no one was waving good bye to me I waved good bye to the French coastline. I am lucky enough to be riding on the top deck with a room of my own- these next weeks will be hard.
-
The American coastline is beautiful; Lady Liberty waited patiently welcoming us to her land. I was quickly granted citizenship.
-
Once off the boat I worked my way down to South Carolina where Jonathan waited for me. He sent a carriage and a lovely driver to help me make my journey. Along the way I met a lovely couple and they have decided to move to South Carolina with us.
-
Once we all reached South Carolina we final got married, the night was wonderful and it was lovely to have our new friends, Annabelle and Franco, there that know what the French life was like and how lovely the new American life is.
-
After the wedding life took a turn for the worst, we moved into a crowded building that was filthy. The jobs are scares and those that we found pay low and conditions are horrid.
-
The conditions become too much and without many people hiring immigrants we are now living on the streets. Things are rough but I don’t regret moving to the U.S. Annabelle and Franco are still with us every step of the way.
-
We have heard marvelous things about the west; thanks to the Homestead Act they are giving away free land! We are taking what we still have- which is not much- and moving west.
-
After we made it to the west we signed up for the land race and get a good lot of land close to Annabelle and Franco.
-
We are very happy again, living out the American dream. I don’t mind doing a little work and helping the men maintain things on the farm. All of our hardship was worth it, I really love our new life.
