Louisiana Purchase
In 1803 France owned the Louisiana territory stretching from Lousiana to Montana. France needed money to help fight in the war they were in and needed money because they were in massive debt. Thomas Jefferson just wanted New Orleans but Nepolean wanted to sell the whole area for 15 million dollars. That was too good of an offer to pass up so Thomas Jefferson signed the Louisiana purchase doubling the size of the United States. -
Corps of Discovery Expedition
The Corps of Discovery was a mission to explore the new territory that Thomas Jefferson bought in 1803. He picked Lewis and Clark to go and be the leaders of the expedition. Thomas Jefferson was hoping for three main things, finding a northern passage way of water to have a direct route to the pacific Ocean. The second was to map out any new life that was seen and the third was to make peace/friends with new indian tribes. the expedition lasted about two years but no passage way was discovered. -
Corps continued
Sacagawea, an indian girl, helped lewis and clark on their expedition by leading them all the way to the pacific ocean and back. she saved the group many times from other indians from attacking the group without her the mission would not have worked out so well. -
The War of 1812
The war of 1812 obviously happened in 1812. The main reason for this was was because the French and British were having a war againts each other but America continued to trade with both the French and British. The British thought that Americans were helping france out in the war so they also declaired war on us. This war is considered pointless because the biggest battle, when Andrew Jackson was general, was faught AFTER a peace treaty was signed which ended the war in a tie or stalemate. -
Flordia Territory
America gained the Flordia territory in 1819 when Andrew Jackson, a general at the time, invaded Flordia which was unorginized at that time. He won and signed the Adams-onis treaty giving america the flordia territory while spain, who owned flordia, had to pay america 5 million dollars. this treaty also settled all land disputes between spain and the united states. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was made by James Monroe the United Stated 5th president. The Monroe Doctrine told all other countries that they could not come into north and south america from economic and political affairs. this also stated that no one else is allowed to colonize in Americas land or they would go to war. This was important because it showed everyone else that we were heading up to be one of the most powerful and strongest country that would not back down to anyone. -
Indian removal acted & trail of tears
The Indian Removal Act is a law that was passed by Congress on 1830. During the presidency of Andrew Jackson. It allowed the president to negotiate with Indian tribes in the Southern United States, mainly flordia, for their removal to territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their homelands. This was done on what is known as the Trail of tears. Which forced relocation of Native American nations to oklahoma. -
Texas
texas used to be there own country called the republic of texas an independent country. texas and mrxico were having trouble deciding whos land was who so spain told texas that they could have the land if they followed spain laws. But then mexico took over spains land and told texas they had to follow their religion and become a part of a church they did not like that. they went to war and won then became a part of the united states -
Oregon territory
James K. Polk wanted the boundry of america and the british to be 54 degrees 40 degrees or fight! which meant that america wanted all the land from the line of lattitude and longitiude 54,40. Great brittian and American compromised and negotiated to settle the line at the 49 degree giving americans up to what is now oregon, washington, etc... -
Mexican American war and Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty
The Mexicans declaired war in 1846 on the Americans to recover their lost territory. The United States crushed Mexico in about a year and a half. Mexicans also went to war because American settlers were crossing the border into mexican territory. Mexicans got very angry and tried to go to war and lost. Americans gained all of the southwest territory on the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. this gave the united states what is modern day Arizona, California,Colorado,Navada,New Mexico,utah,and wyoming.
