    Divided Society and Financial Troubles

    France was split into three estates. The first estate was the clergy which is the church people. The second one was the nobility which was the priest, nuns, monks, etc. The last estate was the rest of the population.
  • Calling the Estates-General

    Calling the Estates-General
    Louis XVI calls the estates-general because France is going bankrupt. The estates made cahiers explaining how they wanted fairer taxes, freedom of speech, and meetings with the estates-general more often. The delegates from the third estate call themselves National Assembly. The meeting hall was locked so they decided that they would go to the tennis court oath.

    Third Stage of the Revolution
    Moderates produced another consitution of 1795 to create the third since 1789. This constituion set up a five man Directory and a two house legislature elected by male citizens. The Directory held power from 1795 to 1799. This caused many loses but also many wins including bread prices, making peace, and revival of royalist feeling. Politicians planned to have Napoleon help them to improve better. Shortly after, Napoleon became ruler of France.

    Storming the Bastille
    Eight hundred parisians charged Bastille because they believed there was weapons located in that building. This started a war which ended up killing many people. They found prisoners being held in there but no weapons.

    National Assembly Acts

    They write the Declaration of the Rights of Man which means that all men are equal. The women tried to fight back to win equal rights but failed. The women march to Versailles to see Marie Antoinette and she refuses to leave. They brought back the king and queen back to Paris. The king and queen run away to Austria and then they realize they are gone and arae drug back to Paris. They all think they are traders to their country.

    King of Prussia and the emperor of Austria made the Declaration of Pilnitz which states that if French monarchy is threatened they will protect them. France took the threat seriously and prepared for war.

    Radicals Take Over
    The new Legislative Assembly took control but struggled economicly and couldnt fix anything. Radicals wanted to get rif of the monarchy and replace it with a republic that could control what was going on. Revolution will spread because the National Assembly prepared for war.

    Monarchy Abolished

    A crowd of Parsians charged the palace and killed the guards and then the royal family fled to the Legislative Assembly. In September 1792 citizens attacked the prisons and killed 1,200 bobles and priests who were accused of political offenses. The convention voted to abolish the absolute monarchy and gave the kind a trial was executed. A month later the queen was trialed and found guilty and was executed.

    Robespierre and the Reign of Terror
    Robespierre became a leader of the Comittee of Public Safety which was a 12 member comittee that controlled France and believed France could only achieve republic of virtue using terror. This reign of terror lasted until July 1794.

    The French Revolution brought the nation together and to defend themselves. Nationalism is feeling to take pride in to one's country. Revolution and war gave the French people a stronger pride in their country. Songs and dances of the revolution became popular.
