    Divided French Society/Financial spending

    In Louis XIV's and Louis XV's rein there had been the French and Indian War and they had helped the American's in their Revolution and they had spent a lot on lavish court. All this had caused a deficit spending to rise where they were spending more than they were taking in. Out of the three estates the Third Estate was the only estate paying taxes and were on the brink of revolt.

    The Call of the Estates General
    As France neared to bankruptcy there was lack of food and the nobles had fear of taxes and the King called together the Estates General.The King had all three estates come together and speak on concerns.Then they would normally vote separately and the first two Estates would always outrule the Third's vote but the Third Estate wished to meet all together.When they came the doors were guarded so they moved to a Tennis Court room and took an oath to not separate until they made a constitution.

    Storm the Bastille
    The City of Paris seized the National Assembly. This event caused 800 Parisians to assemble outside Bastille, a fortress prison in Paris, where they believed they'd find weapons. The Parisians barged into the prison and killed all the guards including the head person in charge who they impaled and put his head on a spear.

    After the revolts by the peasants at Bastille the National Assembly took action and the nobles voted that they be deprived of their own privileges like not paying taxes, things they already lost anyway. In turn the National Assembly fufilled the Enlightenment idea of all men were equal before the law.

    Later in August the National Assembly issued a Declaration of the rights of Man and the Citizen which was much like the Declaration of Independence America had written also using Locke’s ideas of natural rights.This also announced officially the equality of men and even though the men approved the women did not.So Olympe de Gouges demanded that women be granted the same in her Declaration of Rights of Women and the Female Citizen.The king did not want to accept these reforms.

    6000 women marched 13 miles in the rain to demand bread and to make the King and his family move to Paris. When the King came to see them they told him that they wouldn’t leave until they would return to Paris so they wouldnt have to go so far to see the king.

    The King of Prussia and the emperor of Austria issued a declaration of Pilnitz in order to protect Frances monarchy and they believed that if they allowed this to happen in france then it could spread to their country . This was not a serious threat but the Revolutionaries on the other hand took it as a threat and prepared for war.

    Civil War- Radicals take over
    October 1791-1817 The Radicals wanted rid of the monarch for good and to replace it with a republic that they are in control of.Also, a group called the Sans-Culottes were ordinary people who were radical and wore straight pants unlike the nobles and clergy and pushed for more radical changes. The National Assembly prepared for war so the revolution would spread.

    Monarchy Abolished

    A crowd of Parsians went into the palace killed the guards and the royal family fled to the Legislative Assembly. A month later citizens stormed into prisons that held noble and 1,200 prisoners were killed.September 1792 the convention voted to abolish the monarchy and gave the king a trial and was executed January 1793 .Then nine months later the queen was tried and executed by the guillotine.

    Robespierre and the Rein of terror
    Robespierre became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety,a 12-member committee the that basically controlled France. He believed that France should achieve a republic of virtue through the use of terror as a form of right justice for crime.This terror created the Rein of Terror that lasted from September 1793 to July 1794. Around 17 thousand were executed many falsey accused through using the guillotine.

    The Constution of 1795 set a five man directory and two-house legislature wanted to make everything fair for all the citizens. They brought back people who fled the country during the revolution to help make a better constitution. But things didnt work so Napolean Bonaparte,a popular military hero was considered to help but he outwitted them and took control.

    Nationalism spread
    France gained a strong feeling of national pride and devotion to their country.This prride in their country spread to the countries around them. The citizens celebrated this through going to festivals with songs and dance.
