    Life after the killing of King Henry ( the De' Medici and the Guises)

    King Henry killed, therefore the next in line was Francis II. He married the Queen Mary of Scots and Catherine struggles with power due to the conflicts with the Bourbon princes.

    The Causes and Effects of the Religious Wars

    King Charles obtained the throne, but his mother, Catherine de Medici completely ruled over him. During this time period, the religious struggle between the Hugoneots and Protestants were present. Which this struggle soon lead to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre( August 23, 1752- Mass killings and bloodshed btwn Huguenots and Protestants) Although portrayed as a religious war, it was also political and civil, considering that both parties attempted to weaken the crown and control government.

    Reign of Henry III

    He was known for balancing the Catholc and Protestant faith. Afterwards, Henry Navarre escapes prison, converts to Protestant, establishes his court in Nerac, in Guienne, and became the leader of the Protestants. The Holy League is formed and they are allianced with King Phillip of Spain II, and the excersise of Protestant religion is forbidden.
  • 1585- War of the Three Henries (Henri III de Valois, Henri de Navarre, Henri de Guise)

    Henry Guise led the Catholic League, Henry Navarre led the Huguenots and HenryIII invites Guise over and assasinated him with his step brother. Henry III blamed politues and fled to Paris, but assasinated. Henry Navarre won by default because of the deaths of Henry III and Guise.
  • Reign of Henry IV

    Catholic refused to name him king, and elected Cardinal de Bourbon. The Battle of Irvey (March 4, 1590) Bourbon defeated Mayenne. Then Henri IV announced the reformed religion at St. Dennis and in 1594 Henri IV crowned at Chartres (Feb. 27).
  • Conflicts with Spain

    War was declared on Spain in January and the power of the Leaugue was broken.
  • Spanish gets Calais

  • The Resoultion: The Edict of Nantes

    The Edict of nanted was introduced as a peace settlement between the Protestants and Catholics. Although religious tolerance was stated in the document, it wasn't reflected between the two parties. There was still killings and mass desrcuction during that time period and later on in 1628.
