A bomb landed in the street, but no one was all that quite concerned. They were more focused on their lottery that is like life or death to them Winston runs across a man who claims to know what life was like before the party took over. Winston offered to buy the man a drink in order to maybe get some information out of him but the old man refused to offer any good knowledge because he is recalling the past very well but does no good in showing the true differences between life times. -
chapter 8
After the talking to the old man that Winston offered a drink to, he finds himself wandering around and stops by the same store he had bought the diary in. Winston goes in and buys a peice of coral for four dollars and hides it in his pocket to hide it from the thought police. Winston starts a conversation witth the man in hope of finding some information about the past and the man talks about old churches in London that are now destroyed or turned into museums. -

At one rally, a speaker is forced to change part of his speach to say that Oceana is, and always has been, at war with Eurasia. Winston reads in Goldstein's "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism" that was given to him by O'Brien, that Eurasia was created when Russia took over all of Europe, Oceania was created when the U.S. took over the British Empire, and Eastasia was made up of the remaining nations.
