    Revolution Enters the Third Stage

    The French Revolution enters the third stage because to the reaction of Robespierre's Reign of Terror. The people are moving away from the Convention. In 1795, the French government created Constitution that set up five man Directory and two house legislative. Five man Directory held power 1795 to 1799. The Constitution made peace with Prussia and Spain but a war against Austria and Great Britain. As chaos increased, the government planned to use Napoleon Bonaparte to acheive their goals.

    French Created Divided Society
    French created social system that seperated into three classes or estates. The three are First, Second and Third Estates. First are made of clergy as the wealth; Second are mostly nobilitiy that had the government jobs; and Third Estates is vastly diverse known as poor to middle classes.

    Delegates Takes the Tennis Court Oath
    The Third Estated are now people of France and called themselves National Assembly. National Assembly was feared the king might kicked them out in the locked hall and guarded so they decided to take place near indoor tennis court that is called the Tennis Court Oath. Clergy and nobles joined the National Assembly and the king angerly accepted it. There was a rumor the king was plan to dissolve the Assembly.

    Parisians Storm the Bastille
    More than 800 Parisians were outside of Bastille because they want weapons and gunpowder that they believed it was stored in there. The commander of Bastille refused the Parisians' demand and open fire to the crowd. The crowd broke through the defense and killed the commander and guards also released the prisoners. In the end of the battle, Parisians found no weapons and gunpowder.

    Ladies Marching to Versailles
    Six thousand women marched from Paris to Versailles. Maria Antoinette started the angry crowd but she didn't know her acts went largly. The women won't leave Versailles until the king want their demand that is bread. King Louis and his wife and son moved to Tuileries and three years later Louis is a prisoner.

    The Parisians invade the royal palace of Tuileries and killed the king's guard. The royal family fled the palace and moved to Legislative Assembly before the crowd of Parisians arrived. Month later citizens attacked and killed 1,200 prisoners.

    Robespierre and the Reign of Terror

    Robespierre is the chief of Reign of Terror. About 300,000 were arrested and 17,000 were excuted. But many of them were mistaken and accused by their neighbors. The guillotine are used for the excuters. The reason Robespierre created the Reign of Terror is to achieve the revolution even it is necessary to use violence and horror.

    Nationalism Spreaded over France
    10-year French Revolution changed France. It cause to reform social, religious toleration, overthrown monarchy and made the church to take state control. Revolution and war gave the people of France a strong sense of nationaly identity and nationalism.
