Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
On June 14th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne and his wife were gunned down by Gavrilo Princip, who was apart of the Serbian Black Hand terrorist group. This was the start to WWl. -
The Central Powers
This was an alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. Their plan was to take over France and all of Western Europe and Russia -
Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
After the assassination of Franz, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because they were infuriated. Since Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, it caused Russia to declare war on Austria-Hungary which then created a “Domino Effect”. -
Schlieffen Plan
The Schlieffen plan was a plan that called for a quick strike through Belgium to Paris, France. The plan was also designed to prevent a two-from war for Germany. -
The Allies
This was an alliance between nations such as Great Britain, France, and the Russian Empire. They were all fighting to defend the aggression from Germany and the Central Powers. -
First Battle of the Marne
At the first battle of the Marne Germans invaded Belgium. At first, the Schlieffen Plan worked and it forced the Allies back to Marne River which is 25 miles from Paris. French launched counter strike, after 5 days they pushed the Germans back 40 miles. This allowed Russia more time to mobilize -
Sinking of the RMS Lusitania
The sinking of the RMS Lusitania was caused by a German torpedo that killed roughly 1,198 people on board. This was a big cause of why America later joins the war because they are allies with the United Kingdom. -
First Battle of Somme
This battle was fought in the “No Mans Land” in between enemy trenches. No mans land was a terrible fighting condition with just open fields, barbed wire, razor wire, mud, quicksand, and craters. -
Russian Revolution
Some major causes of the Russian Revolution were the Bloody Sunday in 1905 and Russias defeat in the Russo-Japanese war. The Russian Revolution was a time period of political and social revolution. The revolution commenced the abolishment of monarchy in 1917. -
America Declares War
The United States entered the war when the Lusitania, a British passenger liner, was sunk by German ships, which angered Americans. The other reason we went to war was because of the Zimmerman Note. -
Russia Surrendered WWl
Russia’s economy was really taking a hit during WWl so they had to do something about it. On March 3rd, 1918, Russia signed the treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers that officially ended their reign in WWl. -
The Treaty of Versailles
The treaty established nine new nations including Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. It also broke up the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Finally it barred Germany from maintaining an army and they had to pay back France.
