    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    On June 14th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne and his wife were gunned down by Gavrilo Princip, who was apart of the Serbian Black Hand terrorist group. This was the start to WWl.

    This was an alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. Their plan was to take over France and all of Western Europe and Russia

    Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
    After the assassination of Franz, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because they were infuriated. Since Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, it caused Russia to declare war on Austria-Hungary which then created a “Domino Effect”.

    The Schlieffen plan was a plan that called for a quick strike through Belgium to Paris, France. The plan was also designed to prevent a two-from war for Germany.

    At the first battle of the Marne Germans invaded Belgium. At first, the Schlieffen Plan worked and it forced the Allies back to Marne River which is 25 miles from Paris. French launched counter strike, after 5 days they pushed the Germans back 40 miles. This allowed Russia more time to mobilize

    The sinking of the RMS Lusitania was caused by a German torpedo that killed roughly 1,198 people on board. This was a big cause of why America later joins the war because they are allies with the United Kingdom.

    The treaty established nine new nations including Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. It also broke up the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Finally it barred Germany from maintaining an army and they had to pay back France.
