    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This is the event that starts World War I. Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo was a Serbian nationalist.

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
    One month after Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by a Serbian nationalist, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. This is the beginning of World War I. Austria-Hungary declared war because the government felt that it was an attack directly on them.

    Russia and Germany declare war
    Due to the attack on Serbia by Austria-Hungary, Russia starts to fully mobilize its troops. After this Germany declares war on Russia, and Russia also declares war on Germany. Germany then invades Belgium, which is a neutral country. They do this to get to France.

    On August 3rd, 1914, Germany declares war on France. A day later they plan to attack France. Germany asked Belgium if they could pass through Belgium, but they said no. Germany still continued on with their plan by invading Belgium to get to France,

    United Kingdom did not want Germany to have control over Belgium's ports. The ports were really close to the UK, so they declared war on Germany to defend the ports. If they did not declare war to protect the ports, then that could put them at risk for Germany taking their supplies.

    The Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was sunk by Germany. Germany destroys this ship with out any warning. The type of boat Germany used to torpedo the British Ship is called a U-Boat. U-Boats are a type of submarine, and was used for unrestricted ocean warfare throughout WWI.

    Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary
    When Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary, it puts them on the side of the allies in WWI. The allies consisted of Russia, Britain, and France. The central powers were the opposing force, and consisted of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire.

    At this point, Italy has been at war with Austria-Hungary for nearly fifteen months. After their success at the Sixth Battle of Isonzo, they finally declare war on Germany. Italy joined the side of the allied forces.

    The U.S. decided to enter WWI on the Allied powers. The interception of the Zimmerman Telegram angered many Americans, as well as the government. And on top of that, Germany had recently sunk the Lusitania using unrestricted submarine warfare. These are some of the biggest reasons for why the America joined WWI.

    On the first of August, Grover Carter enlists into the military as a medical surgeon for the British army. He chose to volunteer for the military because his brother was recently called to WWI by the draft. He figured he was going to be forced into the military, and by joining he at least got a say in what branch of the military he would be in. He also took pride in helping out his country is some way.

    Grover Carter's base is being attacked by two infantry armies south of him. No one on his crew is critically injured or killed. There is not much more information about this event, but it is noted that these kind of attacks were somewhat regular.

  • Illness

    Illness
    On this day, Grover Carter writes in his journal that he is starting to become ill. He does not know whether he has a cold or the fever. He also writes that he wakes up every morning with a terrible cough. It is not confirmed if he actually was ill, because he died of unrelated causes.

    Attack on Soldiers
    The base that Carter was at was being heavily attacked by cannons. From 9:00 at night to 7:00 the next morning he was under constant fire from the enemy. Nobody had any serious injuries according to Carter's journal. This was the first time he was being attacked by this many cannons at once.
  • The Death of Grover Carter

    The Death of Grover Carter
    Grover carter dies due to shrapnel of a nearby explosion from a hand grenade. A piece of shrapnel that was four inches long severed his spinal cord. It is inferred that he did not die instantly, but that he bled out very quickly. At the time of his death he was helping out other soldiers that were injured due to bullets or shrapnel.

    The End
    On the eleventh day of the eleventh month on the eleventh hour, Germany signed an armistice that Great Britain and France had made for them. Once Germany agreed to the armistice, World War I was over. Although WWI was over the people of Germany were angry at the way their country was being treated as, and punished. This sets the stage for World War II.
