    Archduke Franz Ferdinand Was Assassinated
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austria-Hungarian thrown. He traveled to Serbia to watch a march and Dragutin Dimitrijevic ordered 3 men in the Black Hand to kill him. During the parade they threw a bomb under the car and the driver saw and sped up and the Archduke wasn't hurt. Later on the Archduke wanted to visit the people that got injured in the hospital and the driver went the wrong way through downtown and Gavrilo Princip shot and killed him and his wife.

    Austria Hungary declares was on Serbia
    Austria- Hungary declares war on Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. The Austria-Hungarian government had a few demands to Serbia regarding the assassination before they declared war. They investigated Serbian leaders involvement in the assassination and then they demanded that Gavrilo Princip and the members of the black hand be arrested. They declined stating it “would be a violation of Serbia’s Constitution and criminal in law.”

    First German Aircraft Shot down
    The Voisin III was the first allied plane to shoot down an enemy plane. The Voisan became the official bomber plane of the allies in the war. They were so successful the French purchased almost 800 of them. The Voisin V became the first bomber plane to have a machine gun mounted to it.

    Turkey Joins the War
    During the war, Turkey controlled a large part of the Middle East. With a series of revolutionary defeats in the 19th century they began to lose territories. In fear that Russia was going to try and expand into them, they joined the Triple Entente. With there main fear being with Russia they had a secret alliance with Germany also, and they attacked Russia's Navy Bases together.

    Lusitania Sunk
    The German's released a statement stating that the waters around Great Britain and Ireland are now "Unrestricted" by means of war. This meant no ships entering or leaving this area were safe whether they were neutral or not. The Lusitania was just a passenger ship from new York but Margaret Haig Thomas was sent by her father who got orders from David Lloyd George to bring munitions to Britain. At 1:20 in the afternoon a German U-boat launched a torpedo, sinking the Lusitania.
  • Christmas Truce

    Christmas Truce
    On Christmas Eve, on the western front, both sides agreed to halt the fighting and go into no mans land to collect the dead. They also agreed to cease fire on Christmas day. On Christmas soldiers from both sides were going out into no mans land and saluting each other. At one point the men began playing soccer together. A German soldier on the front line had said "We don't want to kill you, you don't want to kill us. So why shoot?"

    Italy declares war on Austria Hungary
    Originally Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary formed the Triple Entente and swore to work together if either country was attacked by either Russia or France. When Russia began to attack Austria and Germany, Italy did not honor their alliance and tried to stay out of the war all together. With the fear of their own alliance turning on them they put a large number of their military standing guard on the Austrian front. They ended up creating an alliance with Britain for money.

    Roy Avery was on board the H.M.S. Olympic. He said there were 6,000 troops on board. The crew composed of 1,100 members. They all slept in hammocks and he said it was "Colder than Blue Blazes."

    Roy Avery is an American Soldier wanting to be commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant. He took the test at the N.Y. Academy of medicine and got the examination. He passed and was told he'd hear from Washington shortly. He had a explained that until then he would like to stay with his military unit.

    Roy Avery Attack on German U-boat
    He said that he was off shore close to the Irish coast. His boat was being convoyed by 4 well camouflaged American destroyers. By the afternoon they came across 2 German U-boats attacking. He knew they had sunk one and he wasn't sure about the other. The ship didn't sustain any significant damage.

    He had arrived at refreshment camp at 10:30 then the air raid started. He ran inside of a train to avoid falling shells and shrapnel from planes. by the end of the day he said there was another air strike on France. His statement on the raids was "These raids put the kibosh on my getting any hot coffee."

    The Treaty of Versailles marked the ending of the war. The point was to create peace between Germany and the Allies. The treaty basically just punished Germany and blamed them for everything that happened in the war. Plus Germany was forced to agree or the war would not stop.

    Roy Avery "All Hell Broke Loose"

    Avery was located in Luneville and ate breakfast then went to the Quartermaster to get his gas mask and helmet. He went through the day and nothing happened until midnight he was woken up by Germans firing across no mans land. He noted that he stayed in bed 2 o'clock in the morning. The firing did not stop for over two days. He said the Germans had sent over 900 rounds in the first night alone.
  • Roy Avery Admitted into Hospital

    Roy Avery Admitted into Hospital
    A few days before Avery started experiencing symptoms of Influenza. A few days before he told his superior that he was experiencing chronic headaches. The night before he went to the hospital he had a fever of 101 degrees. The next morning he finally gave in and was admitted to the hospital for Influenza.
  • Roy Avery Discharged

    Roy Avery Discharged
    Roy Avery was discharged to Camp Dix in New Jersey. In his memoir it doesn't say why he was discharged. I am going to guess that he was discharged because of his influenza. He was in Brest, France before he arrived in New Jersey to be discharged.
