  • Creation of the Dual Alliance

    The Dual Alliance was a defensive alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, that was created by treaty as part of the Bismark system to prevent war. It stated that Germany and Austria-Hungary would help each other in case of attack by Russia.
  • Creation of the Triple Alliance

    The Triple Alliance was the military alliance between Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy, that lasted from 1882 until the start of World War I in 1914. Each member promised mutual support in the event of an attack by any other great powers, or for Germany and Italy, an attack by France alone.
  • Rise of militarism

    European countries decided to create strong militaries, so that citizens could feel patriotic, and so their country would be strong. This caused people to feel threatened and heat between countries to come up.
  • Rise of Kaiser Wilhelm II and resignation of Bismarck, lapse of treaty with Russia.

    Bismark signed a treaty with the Russian foreign minister that was split in two parts:
    1. Germany and Russia both agreed to observe neutrality should the other be involved in a war with a third country. Neutrality would not apply should Germany attack France or Russia attack Hungary.
    2. In the most secret completion protocol Germany declared herself neutral in the event of a Russian intervention in the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.
  • Franco-Russian Alliance

    France and Russia formed a defensive alliance in response to the reassurance treaty between Bismark and Russia

  • Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

    On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead in Sarajevo, by Gavrilo Princip, one of a group of six Bosnian Serb assassins coordinated by Danilo Ilić. The political objective of the assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary's south-Slav provinces so they could be combined into a Greater Serbia or a Yugoslavia.   • Annexation of Bosnia by Austria-Hungary

    6 October 1908, Austria-Hungary announced the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Britain, Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, Germany and France took an interest in these events. In April 1909 the Treaty of Berlin was made to accept the new status quo bringing the crisis to an end.
