The British ocean liner was destroyed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland. 128 americans were killed during the attack but the Germans stuck to their guns, saying that German had already stated that they would attack all ships that entered the British war zone.

On this day the U.S. president Woodrow Wilosn learns about the telgram from the Germans to Mexico. The next day, Wilson proposed that the U.S. should start arming its soldiers and preparing its ships against a possible attack by the Germans.

A telegram was sent from Germany to the German ambassador in Mexico. The telegram propsoed an alliance between Germany and Mexico and stated that Germany would give Mexico the land they lost to the U.S.

On this day Woodrow Wilson spoke to congress about declaring war against Germany. Two days later, congress agreed that this action was necessary and we declared war on Germany.
