He was the Prince of Austria-Hungary and his assassination in 1914 “SPARKED” the beginning of WWI. The assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand led to the outbreak of world war one in August 1914. The tension between Serbia and Austria-Hungary was intense and the assassination added fuel to the fire. This led to the beginning of World War I.

Austria-Hungary presented Serbia with a rigid ultimatum on July 23, 1914, that all anti-Austrian propaganda within Serbia be suppressed, and that Austria-Hungary be allowed to conduct its own investigation into the archduke’s killing. Though Serbia effectively accepted all of Austria’s demands except for one, the Austrian government broke diplomatic relations with the other country on July 25 and went ahead with military preparedness measures.
