    alliances before WWI were important because they gave the promise that in the the case that war would break out, allies would help them. the countries that belonged to the triple alliance where Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy. the countries in the Triple Entente are Great Britain, France, and Russia.

    The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed in 1914 on the 28th of June. the assassination of Franz Ferdinand is significant to WWI because his assassination would be the main reason why the war had broken out. Gavrilo Princip would be the one to assassinate Franz and his wife Sophie. under the orders of the black hand Gavrilo killed Franz in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Archduke Franz Ferdinand would be killed because he was perceived to be a threat to Serbian independence.

    one month after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. after confirming support from Germany Austria gave Serbia a difficult ultimatum. on the 28th of July Austria-Hungary demanded that all anti-Austria-Hungary propaganda be suppressed, They also wanted Serbia to let them conduct their own investigation on the assassination, etc . Serbia allowed most of the demands except one which prompted Austria-Hungary to go ahead with military preparedness.

    there were many reasons stalemate on the western front. the first reason was that the Schrieffer plan had failed. another reason was that the french couldn't defeat the Germans completely at the battle of Marne because the Germans where more prepared than them and the french and British army was "thrown" together. another reason was that in trench warfare the defending position in was easier than attacking.

    during WWI Russia went through a revolution that destroyed the Russian monarchy and gave power to the Bolsheviks that would later become the communist party. when Czar Nicholas II had Russia joined WWI, the Russian empire would come to have food and fuel shortages. this would cause the people to revolt against Czar Nicholas II and the government which would give way to an easy government take over for the Bolsheviks.

    many Americans wanted america to stay neutral and out of the war, but after Germany's attacks on passenger and merchant ships in 1917 , america was pushed to break neutrality and step into the war. Woodrow Wilson declared war Austria-Hungary on December 7 1917.

    on November 11th 1918, after 4 years of fight, The Armistice that ended WWI was signed. it was signed at Le Francport. The Armistice was signed by the allies and the last remaining enemy with was Germany. Germany would have on 72 hours to accept the terms and agreed with them. fighting stopped and November 11th would become a day to remember.
