Russia, Prussia, Great Britain, and Austria formed a quadruple alliance to enforce the decisions of the Congress of Vienna. It was also the first attempt at an "international society" and was headed by the Prince of Austria.
  • Triple Alliance

Germany, Austria- Hungary, and Italy were apart of this, which stated that they would each provide military support to each other if attacked by France or Russia.
  • Entente Cordiale

This was a series of agreements between Great Britain and France that ended the long period of hostility between them. One example is that Great Britain would provide France with protection from Germany, if needed, and promised not to challenge Britain's control over Egypt.

  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand/ Start of WWI

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was murdered in Serbia while supervising his army there by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrillo Princip. This event also sparked the beginning of WWI, since Austria declared war on Serbia, and then Russia on Austria.
  • Sinking of the RMS Lusitania

The RMS Lusitania, a British passenger boat, departed from New York on its way to Liverpool, even though there many warnings from Germany to not let it depart. As a result, it was shot by a German U-Boat, since WWI had already begun, and killed many of the passengers aboard. This caused the American public to be outraged, and caused trading problems between the US and Great Britain.

  • Fourteen Points

President Woodrow Wilson created this set of proposed war aims. They called for territorial and political settlements if the Entente nations won, preventing future war, as well as a League of Nations to solve overall international conflicts. The Big Four met, but Italy, France, and Great Britain rejected the proposal.
  • End of WWI

This day marked the last day of WWI after Germany signed an armistice with the Allies.
  • Treaty of Versailles Passed

The European Allies wrote this document and gave it to Germany to sign on this day. They wished to be harsh on Germany because there is a wide belief that they started the conflict. Germany had to give up its territories it had acquired during the war, as well as remove troops from certain areas. They also had to claim responsibility for the war, pay huge reparation payments, and prosecute their leaders, but caused much economic and political instability.
