  • The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to Austria, went to Sarjevo, Bosnia and were killed by a Serbian. Austria decided that because their heir was killed they would get back at Serbia and sent an ultimatum. When the demands were not met Austria declared war. The death of Ferdinand was Austria's excuse to start the war. If Ferdinand hadn't been murdered the war would have been prolonged.
  • Russia Declares war on Austria

    July 28, 1914 was the day World War 1 started. Austria declared war on Serbia and Russia on Austria. They were encouraged to give up the fight, but they wouldn't. Austria attacked Serbia and then Russia started to march to help. July 28, 1914 marked the first day when people started to die in mass numbers.
  • Schlieffen Plan

    In case Germany was being attacked on two sides the Schlieffen plan was created. They sent most of their troops to fight France because they thought Russia would take longer to become a real threat. Then they were to send them back and fight Russia. The plan was later destroyed because Germany couldn't keep up with the demands which was a huge benefit for the allies.
  • Russians defeat Austrians

    The Russians battle Austria and won twice in September. Gaining them more land and giving them a huge advantage over Austria for about three months.
  • Allies attack the Germans

    In Paris, France the allies attacked the Germans. They were driven back 60 miles. This event was very important because Germany realized the Schlieffen plan wouldn't work. They had to send a lot of troops to right in Russia as well as France.
  • Gallipoli campaign

    The allies tried to take over the dardanelles so they could they could transport things to Russia faster. Many countries joined the struggle to win the land but the Terks wouldn't budge and the allies eventually gaveup, but not after many people died.
  • Germans attack French

    Germany attacked France at Verdun where many people died. More technology was being built which only made it easier to kill people. Both sides lost more than 300,000 people.
  • The British go to help the French

    The British went to try to help the French at Verdun. This particular battle lasted from July to September in 1916 and more than 1 million people died. The sad part is, no one gained very much out of the battle and all those deaths.
  • The Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

    The Unrestricted Submarine Warfare was a trick Germany used to keep people and goods from sailing. The Germans threated that anyone who sailed near Britain would be sunk by their submarines. The United States got really mad at this because Germany had promised not to use the tactic again.
  • The United States entered the war.

    The United States joined the war when they discovered Germany was trying to become allies with Mexico so they could attack the US. The United States sided with the allies because they traded frequently with the British and Germany had done many things to offend them.
  • Vladimr Ilyich Lenin took power in Russia

    Nicholas II was forced to give up his power in 1917 during the revolution. Vladimr Ilyich Lenin took power. This was a very important event becuase it impacted Russia's rule and Lenin wanted to take Russia out of the war.
  • Germany and Russia make a treaty

    Vladimr Ilyich Lenin wanted to end the war when he came into power and so Russia and Germany signed a truce called the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Russia was out of the war but they had to give up a lot of land to Germany because of the treaty.
  • The second battle of Marne

    At the second battle of Marne the allies began to advance on the central powers. As a result many countries dropped out of the war. A lot of American troops were sent over and the central powers simply couldn't keep up.
  • World War 1 ends

    An agreement was signed that the allies and central powers would stop fighting when Germany became a republic. The war was finally over.
  • The treaty of Versallies was signed by Germany and the allies

    Germany and the allies signed the Treaty of Versallies after the war. Woodrow Wilson came up with 14 points that would keep the peace which made up the treaty. Niether side really wanted to sign the treaty but they made a compromise and the treaty was signed.
