    Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to Austria-Hungary's throne, and his wife, Sophie, are assassinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip while the couple were visiting Sarajevo.

  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

  • Germany declares war on Russia.

  • Germany declares war on France.

  • The United Kingdom declares war on Germany.

    This happens after Germany invades Belgium.

  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia and Serbia declares war on Germany.

  • U.S. President Woodrow Wilson announces the U.S. will remain neutral

  • The Second Battle of Ypres begins.

    It is during this battle that the Germans first use poison gas.

  • The British ocean liner RMS Lusitania is sunk by German U-boat, U-20

    Lusitania primarily ferried people and goods across the Atlantic Ocean between the United States and Great Britain. Of the 1,959 people on board, 1,198 died, including 128 Americans. This is why the US decided to get involved in the war.

  • The United States declares war on Germany.

  • The Treaty of Versailles officially ends WWI.

    Exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Germany's representatives Hermann Müller and Johannes Bell signed the Versailles Treaty in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles near Paris, France.
