Germany declared war on Russia

Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary who declared war on Serbia on July 23, 1914. Russia was allied with Serbia. Due to this, Germany had now joined the war.

Germany needed to begin to implement the Schlieffen plan. Part of the plan was to invade Belgium. Due to this, Germany was now fighting a two front war.

Italy declared war on Germany and Austria

Italy was assured many things by the Allies in the Treaty of London. This is the main reason that they decided to join the Allies instead of the Central Powers. Italy declared war on Germany and Austria. This added another country that Germany was fighting.

USA declares war on Germany

Germany told Mexico they would give back Texas and they would also be given New Mexico and Arizona if they joined them in the war against the United States. Due to this, president Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany. This added another country that Germany was fighting against.

Armistice between Germany and Russia signed

Russian leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin had promised the Russians that he would get them out of the war. The first step he took towards doing so, was signing an armistice with Germany. Due to this, Germany was now only fighting a one front war.

Germany knew that they could no longer win the war but also didn't want to surrender. They asked the Allies for an Armistice. The Allies agreed and it was signed. Due to this, Germany was out of the war.
