    A Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria- Hungary’s heir to the throne, and his wife Sophie. The Serbs living in Austria-Hungary wanted to join their Serbian brethren in Serbia proper, but Austria-Hungary was unwilling to give up the land.

    The Serbs living in Austria-Hungary wanted to join Serbia because Austria-Hungary had taken over part of Serbia. Serbia wanted their land back and Russia (allies with Serbia) helped Serbia against Germany (who was coming to help Austria-Hungary). Thus causing Germany to declare war on Russia.

    Britian was allied with Russia, France and Belgium. When Germany realized that it couldn't fight against both France and Russia at the same time, it attacked France through Belgium hoping for a quick victory. This meant that Britian had to come to Belgiums aid in order to garuntee Belgium's neutrality.
