A German U-Boat Sinks the Lusitania
- The boat was famous for its luxurious accommodations and speed capability, primarily ferried people and goods across the Atlantic Ocean between the United States and Great Britain
- At 1:40 p.m., the U-boat launched a torpedo. The torpedo hit the right side of the Lusitania. The Lusitania sank within 18 mintues kiling 1,198 people.

The First Battle of the Somme Begins
-At the end of the first day of the battle 20,000 British soldiers were dead and 40,000 wounded.

The Zimmerman Note is Discovered
- It was a telegram from the German foreign minister to the German ambassador in Mexico that was intercepted by British agents. -The telegram propsed an alliance between Mexico and Germany and promised that if war with the US broke out, Germany would support Mexico.

-President Wilson appeared before a joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany.
-Germany's renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare and the revelation of a proposed German plot to ally with Mexico against the US, prompted Wilson's action.
