Like any other olympic event, the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics is a shining example of international cooperation and the globalization of modern times. The 1964 Olympics were also a major point in modern Japanese history, proving to the world Japan's newfound intentions of peace and diplomacy with other nations. The Tokyo Olympics also greatly impacted the Japanese economy, with estimates placing 1964 costs at Y$584,900,000,000 or $9,032,281,303,500,000 today.

Gemini 6 was the first manned space rendevouz that relied completely on on-board guidance systems, a major accomplishment for NASA and their quickly expanding space programs. The original flight exploded en-route to orbit, however, in a second attempt, Gemini 6 successfully met and docked with Gemini 7.

This comference and the others like it built upon the Geneva Convention's ban on chemical weapons. The conference also helped to establish an accountability system for the destruction of stockpiled weapons and production facilities on a per country basis. This ensured that the world supply of chemical and biological agents, along with other weapons of mass destruction, would be quickly, reliably, and safely destroyed, which furthermore has created a more orderly and humane waging of war.

Through a process in which the cells are extracted from five-day old embryos, scientists can culture nearly any cell type or organ from small batches of stem cells in a pteri dish. Highly controversial as it is, the technique could save countless lives, and improve many more. Some argue that the effective abortion of the young donated embryos is unethical and inhumane, while others insist that there are little if any moral obstacles to the use of said cells.

Long plagued by instability and government corruption, the introduction of sizeable opposition to the Zimbabwean parliament has in no small part begun to shed light on it's troubled past and uncertain future. Dominated by President Mugabe's strict regime, Zimbabwe has long thirsted for freedom, and ever since the fall of Rhodesia, has awaited equality among its 13-million citizens. However small, the challenge to Mugabe's iron fist shows the possibility for a brighter world future.

After years of research and genetic sequencing, geneticists finally succed in the complete mapping of the human genome. This has lead, and continues to lead to, significant advances in both the study of the human species and their origin, as well as the developement of targeted genomic therapy. This new medical field would allow for the custom treatment of diseases such as cancer and AIDS by looking at individual genes and assessing their connection to said diseases.

When the Netherlands first repealed it's ban on same-sex marriage in 2001, after many years of attempted implementation, it began a cascading effect among other more progressive countries in the years to follow. This has now led to seventeen countries worldwide allowing same-sex marriage, a serious step forward for LGBTQ+ rights and the equal treatment of all peoples across the globe.

Anti-Saddam Hussein rebels raid and capture the Iraqi embassy to Germany, but are quickly outgunned by German police forces. Said rebels sought to "liberate Iraqi soil" and had left Iraq less than a year ago with the intention of collaboration with the German government to overthrow the regime. Unfortunately for them, the German chancellor had no intention of involving Germany with the ongoing Iraqi conflict, and steered clear of any and all political or military action.

The DADT policy banned any and all out-gay members of the United States military, but allowed closeted-gay members. Sixteen years after its implementation, it was repealed by President Barack Obama, however, transexual and intersex members are still banned from military service. While the policy was supposedly intended to protect LGBTQ+ military members and their equal treatment, it was a major failing of the United States government in its pursuit of liberty and equality.

The earthquake and resulting tsunami from the seismic event wreaked havoc across many areas of Japan and resulted in the death of thousands, and the diplacement of many more. Much of northern Japan suffered serious damage,with damage estimates between fifteen to thirty five billion dollars. The earthquake also caused a level seven meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. The event was so powerful, that the Earth's axis was shifted ten inches.

After a year of fighting, the FSA and regime forces sign a temporary truce in the Syrian capital of Damascus. FSA forces were to manage traffic in and out of the city, and a cease fire was in effect for forty-nine days before regime forces broke it in the city of Moadamiyah. The civil war is ongoing, with much of Syria fractured and under rebel control.

After the severing of diplomatic ties and the implementation of a total embargo after 1961, the United States and Cuba reestablished relations and reopened their respective embassies. Cold War tensions between Cuba, the United States, and the USSR had originally led to the severance, while continued communist influences as well as the failure of more than a single coup d'etat kept the two countries distant for decades.

By this time, Ebola had become a major global issue, mainly due to its spread to multiple countries worldwide. Endemic to western Africa, Ebola is a form of hemorrhagic fever that attacks the entire body, and is fairly contagious in its own right. Most local hospitals were unequipped to treat such a serious disease, however, cases within the United States were handled quickly and easily due to its advanced medical care.

During restoration attempts, a giant construction crane fell on an inner wall of the great mosque at Mecca. Minimal damage was sustained to the mosque itself, but over one-hundred were killed and approximately two-hundred-forty were injured. All three-hundred-forty casualties were Hajj pilgrims. King Salman affirme that an investigation was underway, and that a cause would be found and addressed.
