    Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Assasination
    They are assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip (a Serbian). Assasinated by a member of the Black Hand group (anti austrian) Serbs.The first two terrorists were unable to throw their grenades because the streets were too crowded and the car was travelling to fast. Another terrorists tried throwing one under the car but only some attendants were injured. Then Gavrilo Princip fired two shots. He killed them. The effect: Start of War. Caused angry Austrians. They declared war on Serbia.

    It said... 1. Officially end anti-Austria publications and propaganda. 2. Suppress anti-Austria societies 3. Ban anti-Aistrian teachers and books from their schools 4.Dismiss and gov't oficials that Austria might name 5. Accept help from Austria in checking propaganda 6. Allow Austrian officials to assist in the investigation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The effect: This caused Austria to declare war on Serbia because Serbia accepted all the terms except #6 which was listed above.

    Austria took over Bosnia. This angered the Serbians who felt the previous Turkish provence, Bosnia, should be theirs. Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia got involved to defend Serbia. The effect: Due to Russia getting involved to defend Serbia, Austria saw Russia mobilizing and declared war on them (Russia).

Germany was honoring their alliance with Austria- Hungary and the A-H declared war on Serbia who was allies with Russia due to the assasination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian Nationalist. The effect: this created more ally's with Germany and created more unessecary conflict.

    The Ottoman Empire signed a military alliance with Germany. Also the Ottoman Empire had problems with Serbia which was an enemy of the Central powers. The effect: this caused the Central powers to become more powerful now that a new nation was joining them. There became a stronger force of Central Powers wanting to be in war with Serbia.

    The Australian Archduke was murdered by a Serb. Austria took advantage of that to turn on the Serbs who had been making a lot of trouble in the Austria-Hungary Empire. Germans said they would help the Austrians get back at the Serbs (and Russians). They were aware of the alliance France had with the Russians (allies to the Serbs) and their strength. The Germans decided to declare war. The effect: This only brought the war to become a bigger war with more nations fighting.

    Britain declared war on Germany. They declared war on Germany because German troops poured into Belgium as directed under the Schlieffen Plan. The British foreign secretary, Sir Edward Grey, sent an ultimatum to Germany demanding their withdrawal from the neutral Belgium. British then declared war after Germany did not withdraw form Belgium and Britain declared war on Germany. The effect: the entering of a strong ally to Germany which would create more conflict.

    Germans counterattacked Russians at Tannenberg Germany crushed the invading Russian army and drove it into full retreat. More than 30,000 Russians soldiers were killed. The effect: It made the Russians become weaker because of the increased loss of their soldiers, supplies, and strength as a nation. This somewhat had to do with Russia not endering the industrial revolution. They didn't have a good foundation for making supplies needed for war including food.

    Allies attack Germany at the 1st battle of Marne. This was a battle fought by Germany against French and British forces. It marked the end of the warfare which was to characterize the Great War. The German army had began the attack on the Western Front with the Schliefen Plan whose objective was to quickly defear France and then turn their attention to Russians in the east. The effect: It proved the German's strength by them fighting against 2 Allies at once.

    Turkey entered the war on Germany's side. Turkey was enemies with Serbia therefore allied with Germany really well. The effect: Central power would become larger and stronger

    Italy had signed the secret Treaty of London. In this treaty Britain offered Italy large sections of territory in the Adriatic Sea region. Britain and France wanted Italy to join on their side so that a new front could open up the south of the Western Front.

    Leader Tsar Nicholas of Russia tried to keep dialogue going with the German Emporer so a war would keep from starting with them but it was inevitable to try to keep from happening because they were allied with Austria- Hungary. The effect: This created a stronger tie between Austria-Hungary and Germany.

    A German submarine sinks the liner Lusitania. 128 of them were Americans. The effect: This angered the U.S. towards the Germans. This was one of the many events that lead up to the declaration of war against Germans that the U.S. will eventually make.

    This was a reaction to international anger at the sinking of Lusitania and other lines. Kaiser Willhelm suspends unrestricted submarine warefare. This was an attempt to keep the U.S. out of the war. It helped German efforts to prevent American supplies from Reaching France or Britain. The effect: this angered the U.S. and this event was one of the many events that inspired the U.S. to declare war against Germany.

    British creae first tanks ever used in battle, at Delville Wood. Tanks were still failing because it was such new technology. THey were however designed to break through barbed wire and clear a path for the infantry.The effect: This promoted the inspiration to keep trying to create and improve new technologies in order to better improve armys. This will also help a nations economy because it will give them more business in factories with the new technology needed for creation

    The British caught a telegram from Germany's foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmermann to German ambassador in Mexico. Messaage said Germany would help Mexico gain lost territory back they lost to the U.S. British decoded it and gave it to the U.S. The effect: U.S. would eventually enter WWI. They later declared war with Germany due to this event and many other events building up to the anger towards Germany.

    President Wilson asked Congress to declare war with Germany. The U.S. entered war on the side ofthe Allies. The effect: War went for longer because now there was a new nation fighting in the war.This was worse for the Triple Entente because they had more Allied nations to fight.

    Intended as Germany's final major attempt to breakthrough the Western Front before the arrival of the U.S. troops on the battle field. Battle included Germans vs. French. It showed a significant Allied victory. Once the Germans lost to the Allies, they lost alot of ground and amount of commanders in their army. The effect: this was a turning point in the German power. They were starting to become weaker and basically handing their power over to the Allies.

    Meeting was in attempt to gain peace with Germany. The effect: The treaty said: 1.Germany had to accept blame for starting the war 2. Germany had to pay for reparations made from war 3. Banned from having an airforce or submarines. Could only own 6 battleships, Army of 100,000 men. Only 100,000 men in army. Wasn't allowed to place troops in the Rhineland. 3. Germany lost territory in Europe given up to Britain and France 4. Germany forbidden to join the League of Nations or unite with Austria

    The treaty was signed by Germany and Allied powers.The effect: Germans denied the fact their gov't signed the treaty at all. Money in Germany became almost useless and everyone was poor because all the money was in attempt to pay reparations in the war which the treaty said they had to do. This later on was one of the causes of WW2... The build up of Germain frustration was unsettling to them.
