    A large trail between the Missouri River and Oregon Territory that was set by hunters and used by settlers who wished for adventure and new land.

    Manifest Destiny
    The beleif that the US and its settlers were destined to expand across North America. Many endorsed the idea, but many others rejected it (Lincoln, Grant, etc.)
  • Era of Good Feelings

    Era of Good Feelings
    A period of time that reflected a time of American nationalism after the US "victory" in the war of 1812.

    The Era of Good Feelings provided an extreme sense of Nationalism, or pride for the country.
  • Adams-Onís Treaty

    Adams-Onís Treaty
    Treaty betwen the US and Spain that gave the US the land of modern day Florida and created the boundary of New Spain.
  • Passing of the Missouri Compromise

    Passing of the Missouri Compromise
    Idea created by Henry Clay and passed by Congress, it added Missouri to the US as a slave state, added Maine to the Union as well, and expanded American territory with a line extending west from the bottom of Missouri. Made the number of slave states and free states equal at the time.

    A trail similar to the Oregon trail, providing a path for settlers to move to the western territories. Connects Independence, Missouri to Sante Fe, New Mexico.

    President James Monroe introduces idea in State of the Union that any other European settlement in the Americas would be considered a hostile move against the US.
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs

    Bureau of Indian Affairs
    An agency of the federal government that handles land that belongs to the Native American tribes. Still a part of the federal government today.
  • Passing of the Tariff of Abominations

    Passing of the Tariff of Abominations
    A tariff desgined to protect manufacturing in the Northern States. Dubbed "Tariff of Abominations" by the southern civilians because of the negative effects on their plantations.
  • Whig Party

    Whig Party
    A political party that was originally made to oppose Andrew Jackson and his presidency and his democratic party. Beleived in including slavery in the states. "Whig" means to oppose tyranny.
  • Spoils system

    Spoils system
    A practice where after a President won the election, they give government jobs to supporters. Not liked when Andrew Jackson performed this, especially by opponents.

    The land set aside for the Americans to relocate Indians from the Trail of Tears and other relocations.

    Authorized the President to negotiate with the native tribes for their ancestral land.

    A series of forced relocations of Native Americans that took place between 1830 and 1850.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    A sectional crisis that took place in the years 1832-33 in which South Carolina declared that the Tariffs that had recently been passed unconstitutinal.
  • Battle of the Alamo

    Battle of the Alamo
    A pivotal battle in the Texas Revolution; after Mexican general Antonia Lopez de Santa Anna's cruelty against the Texans on the Alamo base, it inspired many Americans to join the army and then used this new army to defeat the Mexicans and end the war.

    A group of pioneers that ventured the Oregon Trail. Many memebers of their party died of starvation and exposure and some survivors had to resort to canibilism. A famous example of the hardships taken on the Oregon Trail.

    The news of gold in California drew thousands of people to the region in search of riches from both within the country and from across the world.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    With the defeat of Mexico's army, the country seeked for solutions to end the war. This treaty ended the war and gave America the Mexico territory.

    Forty-Niners (from the year many of them arrived, 1849) was the nickname of the miners that mined in California for gold during the California gold rush
  • Gadsden Purchase

    A region of land that is now a part of Southern Arizona and Southern New Mexico that was purchased from Mexico. This region of land is still ours and rests on the border of Arizona and New Mexico with Mexico.
