Period: 1821 to 1830 Massive amounts of people move to Texas to grow cotton and settle herds. 1829 Mexican President Vicente Guerrero outlawed slavery. 1829 The Dahlonega Gold Rush begins. 1830 200,000 people and 1,000 enslaved people are in Texas at this point. 1830 Mexican President Anastasio Bustamante extends the anti-slavery laws to Texas and threatens military occupation if the rules are ignored 1830 Andrew Jackson asks Congress for the Indian Removal Act 1833 General Santa Anna became President and was known to be incredibly passionate in his opposition to slavery. 1834 Santa Anna declared himself dictator. 1835 Southerners realized their were few opportunities to add new slave states. Period: 1835 to 1836 Texans declared independence and began a revolution. 1836 Texas becomes and independent country. 1845 Texas asked to be annexed.
