On August 1814, a British force marched into Washington. Dolly Madison, the presidents wife, fled the whitehouse and took all of Madison's important papers. The British set fire to several government buildings.

The British first attacked Fort McHenery. Young American, Francis Scott Key, watched the attack and in morning saw the American flag still above the fort. On the back of an envelope, wrote a peom, which became known as the "Star Spangled Banner".

The battle of Plattsburgh was the final invasion of the northern states. The battle took place shortly before the Treaty of Ghent was signed. The Americans won the battle of Plattsburgh.

A group of federalists met in Hardfort, Conneticut. Some delegates suggested that New England states secede. Secede means to withdraw.

Britain had tired of war. On Christmas Eve, the two sides signed a treaty, that ended the war. The treaty made everything the same as it was before the war.

News of the treaty took several weeks to reach the United States. In that time the two sides fought another battle. Smericans won a stunning victory against Britain.
