    The United States was very interested in Cuba. It lied only 90 miles from Florida and was rich in sugar production. The U.S wanted to buy Cuba from Spain but the Spanish was not going to give up Cuba.

    Since the Cubans were trying to rebel from Spain, the Spanish decided to let the Cubans have no more slavery against them. They were free. But after the Cubans were free, Americans decided to put down investments on the sugar productions and plants.

    Jose Marti was a cuban poet and journalist that helped the Cubans to start a revolution. Marti told the cubans to destroy all property especially the American-owned sugar mills. He started a second war for indepence from Spain.

    Spanish sends Valeriano Weyler
    The Spanish send Valeriano Weyler to restore order to Cuba Weyler tried to restore order by putting the western and central Cubans into bard wired concentration camps. Thousands of Cubans died in these camps.

    With Weyler creating these concentration camps, he ended up fueling a war over newpaper. William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer were the newspaper tycoons. They created newspapers exaggerating stories to bring readers. Since they were doing this, they created Yellow Journalism

    President William McKinley is elected President of the United States. McKinley helped fuel the war with the Spanish and helped the U.S gain land from other countries.
  • The De Lome Letter

    The De Lome Letter
    The Cuban minister, Enrique Dupuy de Lome, wrote a private letter to the United States criticizing President William McKinley. Someone found out about the letter and took it from the cuban post office and sold it to the U.S. From there it was posted in all the newspapers. Embarrassed by the letter he wrote, Enrique Dupuy de Lome resigned from power.
  • U.S.S Maine Explodes

    U.S.S Maine Explodes
    The U.S.S. Maine was sent to Cuba to bring home American citizesn who were endanger from the fighting and to protect the American property. When sailing on the harbor of Havana, the U.S.S Maine exploded. More then 260 men died that day. No one knos why or how the ship exploded but everyone thinks that Spain blew it tup.

    War is Declared with Spain
    After the U.S.S Maine exploded, the United States wanted war. They would cry "Remember the Maine!" for the intervention in Cuba. The Spanish did nothing. They agreed to everything to the U.S demanded even a six-month cease-fire. Besides the military involvement, the people of the U.S also had favored the war. So on April 20th, U.S went to war with Spain.
  • War in Philippines

    War in Philippines
    The first battle between the Spanish and the U.S took place in the Philippines. The American fleet sailed over to the Philippines. The next morning, Commodore George Dewey gave the commmand to open fire on the Spanish fleet. The Spanish werer taking refuge in Manila, the Philippines capital. Soon in the next few hours all the Spanish fleet there was destroyed.

    In order to keep the U.S out of Cuba, they decided to put up a blockade. Admiral William T. Sampson effectively got passed the blockade and sealed up the Spanish fleet in the harbor of Santiago de Cuba.

    The Rough Riders were men that volvunteered to join the Spanish- American War. They were lead by Colonel Leonard Wood. His second in command was, later President, Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt lead the Rough Riders up the hill to take Santiago, Cuba.
  • Treaty of Paris (1898)

    Treaty of Paris (1898)
    The Treaty of Paris was signed on December 10th of 1898, but did not come into play until April 11th, 1899. It was signed to end the Spanish- American war, when the Spanish surrendered, The Treaty of Paris stated that the Spanish must give up Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines.

    After the War
    The U.S makes Cuba a protectorate. The Cuba are free from Spain, but must listen to the U.S. cuba is allowed to have their own Constitution, but it must be signed by the U.S Congress since we took control over them and brought them to freedom.
